 Hard to believe we have seen a decking season come and go so quickly. Where does the time go? Before you know it we will be staring straight at the 2009 season. Nobody really knows what the outlook will be for next season but one thing is for certain it will get here. What you do with the next few months will make the difference in your business for next year. If you choose to listen to the media you may want to begin digging a hole to hide in just so you can survive. But, I am reminded of a saying from one of my college professors "The situation is never as good or bad as the press reports" This is more true today than ever.
Just last winter, rising consumer prices were said to represent a super-ultra emergency- now that consumer prices are falling, that's supposed to be bad too, owing to the possibility of deflation. But innovation and rising labor productivity are supposed to drive down prices. Lower prices are a core goal of capitalist economics! These points should serve as reminders that the mainstream media always present all economic news as bad. Higher interest rates? Bad for borrowers. Lower interest rates? Might cause inflation. Normally, the media's penchant for spinning all economic news as bad doesn't matter - but right now it does, as pessimism more than logic seems to be driving the weak economy.
Do you think we would all have a different outlook if the media had a gag order placed on them for the next four months? You have a chance to do that and to change your attitude towards the economy and your business. Try telling everyone you meet that your business is right where it is every year at this time and that you are excited about the upcoming season. You wouldn't be lying to anyone (not even yourself) are you historically ever busy this time of year? Are you looking forward to the opportunity of being busy? Well, let's all shout it from the nearest mountain top for all to hear.
You also have an opportunity to change the way your business operates. Albert Einstein once said "Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different outcome" Use this off season to review everything about your business from top to bottom and see how you might make changes that gain you that extra project. You also should look at your association to see how you can get more out of your membership. Get involved in a committee, help form a local chapter or check out the marketing opportunities of the web site or mailers. What a better way to get ready for next season than by offering your help on a committee and working with others around the country. One of the greatest items about NADRA is the exchange of information between members from around the country and the helping of others. You can do both by working in the off season on a committee that also helps your industry. 2009 decking season will be here soon what are you doing to be ready?
