Greetings!
Outdoor living products seem to be the highlight category in the building industry these days. With an estimated 150 billion in construction total sales, a whopping 33% accounts for the outdoor living category. We are continuing to experience steady growth in our industry. New and exciting decking and railing products just keep rolling out from manufactures dedicated to refining their product offerings. Custom Decks are the common rule now rather than the exception, and they continue to increase in size and scope projects. The opportunities to introduce additional features into our outdoor living designs just keep coming; lighting, outdoor kitchens, overhead shade structures, along with introducing the elements of fire and water has catapulted our industry into the lime light. So, everyone wants to be a deck builder now and it's great. It's time to take advantage of your experience and capitalize on it. Building quality well designed spaces that meet the increasing code requirements give the experienced committed builders a leg up on the competition. Using solid design plans, knowing your products and providing your customers with peace of mind will keep our schedules filled and our companies growing. Folks I have worked with builders that have been in this business 20 plus years that have learned more in these past two years through working with fellow members of the association then in all the previous years combined. Give yourselves and your companies the advantage of membership in NADRA. " Where the excitement begins " Sincerely,
Michael Beaudry

From The Deck of The President |
Wow! What an amazing month we are about to finish. The Maryland and Pennsylvania chapters both finished projects for the Deck for a Soldier ™ program. This could not have happened without great participation both from their chapter members and the manufacturers\distributors. This program has been very well received at the military level and they jumped in both feet first and provided some great support on their end as well. We hope to grow that relationship in the future and work closely with them as we continue this program. I believe all who were involved were greatly touched and will forever remember these projects and the families they reached. In the future I see in the possibility of reaching other groups who freely give of themselves to protect our families - the police and fire departments for example. Who knows how many we can reach and lives we can change.
The soon to be famous road trip originating from the NADRA headquarters has begun and they are currently here in Colorado with plans to make it to 21 states. Watch the web site for notes and photos as they update us on their progress and travels. Who knows they might possibly be stopping by to check in on you - so be sure to answer that phone!
We are also fast approaching the 2008 Remodeling show in Baltimore. (September 9th - 12th) NADRA will have a booth there and we hope to see a few of you there as well. This will be an opportunity for NADRA to reach out to the remodelers who build decks and for our members to be exposed to vendors and distributors that don't normally come to DeckExpo. This would also be a great chance for you to stop by our booth and let us know a little about your business and how NADRA can be of service to you.
We are just past the half way point of the year and I really do not know what has happened to a couple of those months. What was once thought to be a down year is looking just the opposite and here at NADRA things could not look brighter. We are growing faster than anyone ever expected with new opportunities appearing almost daily. I can honestly tell you that you are truly in the right place at the right time and I am very excited to be able to be a part of all NADRA has to offer.
Got an idea or question drop me a line (shawn@nadra.org) or call the headquarters 888.NADRA4U (888.623.7248) we are here to help.
Happy selling and building,
Shawn

Deck Trek 2008 |
NADRA HQ Hits the Road!
Wednesday July 23 my father and I packed up to trek across North America visiting friends and fellow NADRA members along the way.
For those of you that have called HQ you are well aware of my tightknit family that works together managing this incredible association. I love what I do. I love that this industry is about selling FUN. Bringing the family together outside on the deck around the firepit makin' smores. That's what it's all about.
Putting family first, we decided that it was time for a break. How could we manage a vacation while still accomplishing something great? And then it came to us - "Deck Trek". We would travel the United States visiting friends, family and fellow NADRA members.
Pops and I left NADRA HQ located in Quakertown, PA on Wednesday 7/23/08 at 4:00pm EST. We mapped out our first stop to see NADRA President, Shawn Miller. The drive to Colorado took us 30 hours... no stopping! Sleep? Who needs sleep? Sleep is overrated. We've got things to do and people to see. The US of A is stretched out in front of us and there is no time to lose.
Keep your eyes posted to the NADRA website for updates on our Deck Trek across N. America!
NADRA Rocks!

Deck For a Soldier Update: |
July 3rd marked the ribbon cutting ceremony on the just completed Deck for a Soldier (D4S) project through the NADRA Maryland Chapter. About 45 people were in attendance, including military personnel, volunteers and the family of National Guard Staff Sgt. Brian Daughters. NADRA Board Member, Ray Steward of RWSDECKS, Inc. (Towson, Maryland) was general contractor for the project and was on hand for the ribbon cutting, along with Michael Beaudry, NADRA's Executive Vice President. "The effort we've put into this pales in comparison to the effort service men and women make on our behalf every day," said Steward. Steward coordinated volunteers from the Maryland Chapter to obtain everything from labor, permits, materials, and other items like arranging for portable toilet, dumpster, and catering for the July 3rd unveiling. Dave Lombardo, (NADRA Maryland Chapter member) of American Decks volunteered time to cut and set the stringers for a semi-circular waterfall staircase. Bill Hensley, also of American Deck, did the risers and tread for that staircase, and according to Steward "cussed Dave L. the whole time" (Sorry Dave, take it up with Bill...). A good natured group of volunteers from the Maryland Chapter, including Steward's RWSDECKS crew built the deck, estimated at $20,000 in value, in six days. [Click here for a full list of volunteers and materials]. The Daughters were chosen through a selection process conducted by the National Guard and NADRA, that included three criteria: the soldier's story, location of the home, and its suitability for a deck project. Of the NADRA Maryland Chapter, Steward said that he was absolutely floored that so many members immediately stepped up to donate time and materials for this project. "At our inaugural meeting in May, I proposed that we do this project, thinking that it would be a great first event for a newly formed chapter. The work on D4S for the Daughters has been tremendously unifying for our chapter. Who can't stand behind this cause?"

Code Corner : Building Code Grant Passes House
The Community Building Code Administration Grant (CBCAG) Act passed the House July 9. The legislation now goes to the Senate. The CBCAG is an ICC effort to raise the visibility of code officials on Capitol Hill. The benefit to our industry is better informed building departments and inspectors as relates to decks.
When enacted and funded, the CBCAG will provide matched, competitively evaluated federal grants, to jurisdictions who seek to build-up their building and fire code administration and enforcement capabilities, including to hire, train and equip code officials, including building inspectors. Deck inspection training is available through NADRA, and could be made more easily available to local jurisdictions through the use of the CBCAG. Watch the Buzz for updates on this bill. NADRA members will be asked to help make the CBCAG known to local jurisdictions to further deck inspection and safety education. |
