From the Deck of The President |

As I write this note we have just entered June and summer has begun even though we had snow here in Colorado last week and in the Seattle area this week. I think the weather is a bit like our businesses this year - just a little crazy! I'm sure we are all experiencing the same things with some days up and some days down but overall most everyone I have spoken with is on target with last year. I have heard some guys that are way up and busier than ever which so is refreshing to hear. Keep moving forward and don't listen to the media, just treat everyone the way you want to be treated and it is going to be another profitable year.
The board of directors met in Chicago the first couple days of June and it was a very exciting and productive meeting. You would all be very proud of the people giving their time to you and the industry as they really are the cream of the crop. Just an unbelievable group of talented people that have put aside their personal goals and are working hard to do what is right for us all. Progress is being made within codes and our voice is being heard and recognized by the ICC which is great for us all. Local chapters are forming across the country and we were able to vote to charter four new chapters with four others very close to meeting all the requirements. We have a new chapter handbook, available online in the members section, to aid in the process that lays out all the requirements and will be very beneficial in starting a chapter in your area. Our education program is just about to be released and you will be blown away by the quality of the program and classes coming your way. The web site is constantly being upgraded to further benefit the consumer and members alike. You can add photos to the portfolio page which is a great way to get your work seen by those who matter most - customers! So much more is happening that I don't even have space to write it all so go to the web site and look for news and watch for the "Buzz". If you don't currently receive the Buzz, visit us at www.NADRA.org and sign up. It is a great way to keep up during these busy times.
We also just finished another very successful Deck Safety Month® and we had more media exposure for this event than ever before. The word is spreading to Check your Deck® and more consumers are learning about this program and our association every day. It is a win/win for everyone with an education class coming to help you become better aware of the proper items to check and look for to help consumers in your area.
I wish I had time to tell you all the exciting things that are happening and coming however time and space won't allow but believe me, NADRA is fast becoming the association that is being noticed and everyone wants to be a part of our energy. With so many good things happening, we need more people to be involved and to help on one of the committees or with a local chapter. Take the next step and join us in changing our industry. Be the sunshine during these cloudy economic times and build your customer an outdoor space they can really enjoy. If you are not yet a member what are you waiting for? Send me a note to shawn@nadra.org or call the office at 888.NADRA4U (888.623.7248) we will be glad to help you with taking the right steps towards membership and getting involved. Happy selling and building Shawn

NADRA Certification Course; A Success! |
Another successful NADRA certification class! On Tuesday, June 17, 2008 NADRA members, ASHI members and non-members alike gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bridgewater, NJ for the NADRA Certification class on Deck Connections.
A BIG thanks goes to Mike Schwartz from:
 For sponsoring this NADRA event!
This program provides a better understanding of what may cause a deck to fail and what a code compliant deck looks like. The International Residential Code and International Building Code have requirements for post and column supports, post-to-beam connections, bearing requirements for joists, stair treads, stringers and port-to guardrail connection requirements. This program reviews the standards and methods used to satisfy those requirements. Also, reviews what causes corrosion of metal connectors and fasteners, and Simpson Strong-Tie guidelines when selecting the proper connector and fastener. Please contact NADRA HQ if you have any questions or are interested in learning future dates and locations: 1.888.623.7248

Deck For a Soldier™ Update:
|
Local NADRA Chapters have stepped up in a big way to support those who give us our freedom.
PA Deck for a Soldier™ Update:
Jennifer Dunckley said they were a God-sent gift.
Local deck builders wanted to help the family of an Iraq war veteran and a local congressman suggested Jennifer and her two small children. Jennifer's husband, Army Sgt. James Dunckley, was killed in the line of fire a little over a year ago, leaving Jennifer to raise their son and daughter in Yardley, PA.
Builders in the PA Chapter of NADRA are going to build the Dunckley's a beautiful new deck as a gift to the family and a tribute to Iraq war veterans. At last month's chapter meeting, deck builders who sometimes compete with each other were designing the deck side-by-side at a laptop computer. The excitement of working together to help the young family was contagious.
"What a God-sent gift this turned out to be," Jennifer Dunckley said. A two-day work party is in full swing for NADRA members to build the deck from start to beautiful finish. All materials and labor are being donated by NADRA members.
MD Deck for a Soldier™ Update:
The Maryland Chapter is also well on its way to building their local Deck for a Soldier™ More details coming soon!
