This program will provide a better understanding of what may cause a deck to fail and what a code compliant deck looks like. The International Residential Code and International Building Code have requirements for post and column supports, post-to-beam connections, bearing requirements for joists, stair treads, stringers and port-to guardrail connection requirements. This program will review the standards and methods used to satisfy those requirements. Also, we will review what causes corrosion of metal connectors and fasteners, and Simpson Strong-Tie guidelines when selecting the proper connector and fastener. Objectives: After successfully completing this course you will be able to:
-
Identify common causes of deck failures
-
Put into practice standards and methods of code compliant connections
-
Choose fasteners and connectors for specific applications
NADRA Certification Course: Upon successfully passing the test offered at the end of this course, you will receive a certificate good for a period of three years for Deck Framing Connections as taught by Simpson Strong-Tie. Please contact NADRA HQ if you have any questions: 1.888.623.7248 | |

NADRA Recognized by ICC The month of May is a time for several safety programs. First observed in 1980, Building Safety Week is sponsored by the International Code Council (ICC). During May 5 - 11, 2008, across the nation, communities promoted the use and understanding of building safety codes to protect lives and property. This year, the ICC recognized NADRA as an Allied Association as a result of its efforts for building safety, through our Deck Safety Month® program. Follow Link

Bill Before Congress May Mean Funding for Local Building Departments Community Building Code Administration Grant Act (CBCAG) is currently under consideration by Congress. This legislation authorizes a grant program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant would provide $100 million per year over an initial five year period to help local governments hire, train and equip code officials, including building and fire inspectors. If enacted and funded, the CBCAG would provide locally matched, competitively evaluated federal grants, up to $1 million per jurisdiction. The resulting grant funds could certainly be used by jurisdictions get up to speed on deck, dock and railing code, and related safe building practices. For more information, Follow Link

EPA Not so Concerned about Existing CCA Structures Anymore US EPA recently announced the availability of its final report "A Probabilistic Risk Assessment for Children Who Contact CCA-Treated Playsets and Decks" Based on re-evaluation of previous studies and alternate studies, EPA states that it does not believe there is any reason to remove or replace CCA-treated structures, including decks and playground equipment, and also that they are not recommending surrounding soils be removed or replaced. See updated EPA "Consumer Advice Related to CCA-Treated Wood" here: HereSee press release: Here |

Have a Fun and Safe Memorial Day Weekend! |
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May Read On... |
