From The Deck Of The President |
As we approach the end of April, I am surprised at the wide variety of reports I am hearing about the economy. Even in my own backyard I hear varying reports of the market both from other builders and customers. My approach to sales seems to be ever changing and I keep looking for new ways to reach the consumer. I can tell you that it is taking more effort to get those early season sales but overall the interest is there. More people are staying in their houses and the remodel business (replacements and rebuilds) is looking very strong for the decking industry. The press would like us to buy into the doom and gloom about just how bad things are but I recently read a report coming from the Realtor Industry and the inventory of new homes is down which is a good sign for the market. So, find new ways to be different than your competition - something other than price. Be creative in your designs and suggest add-ons and upgraded features. By setting yourself apart from the low dollar competition you give customers the reason to go with your company Read On...

Earth Day 2008 Earth Day -- April 22 |
On April 22, 1970 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda." NADRA will make an effort in the months and years ahead to be more "Green".
"We can all do little things to help" says NADRA's Green Committee Chair Gustavo De La Cruz. "As a contractor myself, I do what I can to be more green. At the end of each deck project I take scrap decking materials and build a planter box for the homeowner. It doesn't take long at all and I'm helping in a way that I can. Plus, homeowners really appreciate the extra effort. Do what you can to be more green. Contact me if you have ideas for NADRA or other deck builders on becoming more green."

Is Your Deck Safe? May is Deck Safety Month®
April 2008 (ARA) - As spring approaches, thoughts turn to sprucing up the yard, the garden, and spending more time outdoors. Part of gearing up for this time of year is making sure your deck is safe and well-maintained.
A deck can be the perfect place to spend time enjoying the weather with friends and family. A well-built and maintained deck offers a safe haven for outdoor living. However, an improperly built or deteriorated structure can mean disaster. A deck collapse can cause unnecessary, and often serious injuries, and even death. In an effort to save lives and prevent injuries, the North American Deck and Railing Association, Inc. (NADRA) declared May as Deck Safety Month in 2006. Now in its third year, the Deck Safety Month program helps increase public awareness of the necessity for regular inspection and maintenance of existing decks, and proper installation of new decks.
The number of deck failures and resulting injuries has been increasing at an alarming rate. Between 2000 and 2006, there have been at least 30 deaths reported as a direct result of deck collapses and more than 75 percent of people on a deck when it collapses are injured or killed, illuminating just how important it is for homeowners to check their deck. There are 40 million decks in the U.S. that are over 20 years old. At a conservative 1 percent, that means 40,000 decks are currently in need of repair or replacement. Read On... |

NADRA Chapter Update: |
Good Day to All:
The membership committee is excited to announce additional chapter formations for Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York State, New York Long Island & Northern Virginia.
Once again, Parksite has taken a lead role in organizing the MD and VA Chapters. A great example of teamwork and concern for larger industry goals is the second MD Chapter meeting where Snavely Forest Products hosted the event located at Parksite. PPW graciously extended it's facilities while Snavely provided food and drink and was the host sponsor. Thank you Snavely and Parksite!
We are looking forward with high expectations to a local Chapter "handbook" which will add clarity and speed to the chapter formation process. In addition, the handbook will serve as a guide to the local chapter moving forward. Many great questions have risen during this huge growth effort which we hope to answer with this handbook. One example of such question is the local chapter's bylaws. "Can they be the same as the National association's bylaws and how might they be modified?" The answer: Yes, the local chapter can simply adopt the National by-laws as modified slightly for local chapters which is detailed in the upcoming handbook. This one Q&A will clarify that question which befuddles every LC (Local Chapter) during formation. Additionally, the handbook will have all chapter formation forms necessary with descriptions for proper usage as well as examples of meeting invitations and announcements.
Please email me with any questions regarding LC or membership at: Dave@amdeck.com
Best regards,
Dave Lombardo Membership Chairman
