Deck for a Soldier - Project Complete!
NADRA® is pleased to announce that the first ever recipient of the Merit Award - Deck for a Soldier was recently completed. National Guard Sergeant Renee Thomas of Owasso, Oklahoma is the proud owner of a new deck built by NADRA member Rick Vaughan of Sawdust Ltd.
The Merit Award is an annual program to honor individuals who serve our communities and our nations. Deck for a Soldier is the 2007 Merit Award project. This community effort is an expression of appreciation for the service and dedication of the men and women of our armed forces.
In a phone interview, Sergeant Thomas expressed that she is excited and grateful to NADRA, Vaughan, and the companies donating materials and time for her new deck. Sergeant Thomas has been overwhelmed by the welcome home she has received from her community. She has had surprise visits from neighbors, and is looking forward to getting to know them better when she can entertain them on her new deck. "This is the first time someone has ever done something like this for me. This is truly a blessing. I believe that if you give, God will bless you, and he surely does." Thomas said.
Who was involved:
- Sawdust, LTD - Design & installation; provided treated pine framing material, concrete, weed barrier, miscellaneous fasteners, composite skirt material, composite curve bench, bird houses.

Simpson Seminar Held at Bear Creek: |
Simpson Strong-Tie Seminar A Success!
NADRA Members, Simpson Strong-Tie traveled to Macungie, Pennsylvania to hold a Deck Framing Connections Seminar for decking professionals on January 29, 2008. The resort facility of Bear Creek was packed with over 40 attendees, many of them NADRA members. NADRA members came out from as far away as Elmira New York, Dover New Jersey, and Rockville Maryland.
For the first time, NADRA was able to offer a certification exam in connection with an education course. We are very pleased to announce that 20 NADRA members took and passed the test. Each will receive a certification for deck framing connections from NADRA and Simpson.
Many of the attendees hung around afterwards to enjoy the resort facilities and network with other industry professionals. Michael Beaudry, NADRA Executive Vice President states, "Seeing distributors, dealers, contractors, manufacturers, inspectors all in the same room giving insight into Code compliant construction was the culmination of a four year goal of the association."
Many thanks to Jim Mailey of Simpson Strong-Tie for his time and effort in putting on this course. The course was also availabe from NADRA at this year's DeckExpo in Orlando, Florida.

Chapter Spotlight
January was an exciting month for NADRA® Chapter formation!
Three new Chapters are on their way, one in New Jersey and two in New York. Special thanks to Parksite Plunkett-Webster (PPW) for sponsoring and facilitating these meetings. The New Jersey and New York State events were very well received in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Several chapters are in the planning stage through coordination with NADRA Membership Committee Chairman, Dave Lombardo.
New Jersey - Held on January 16, 2008 with about 40 attendees. There was a surprise visit by Sponsor Host PPW president, Jim Daniels. Jim's presence was a statement in itself and a testament to PPW's support of NADRA and its mission. Jim clearly stated how the decking industry is in its infancy and how critical it is that NADRA succeed in becoming the Industry Voice and raising the bar in regards to education, consumer perceptions, and professional approach. Fifteen to twenty companies indicated immediate interest in NADRA participation and membership.
New York State - Held on January 17, 2008. This snowy evening saw about twenty attendees willing to brave the weather. The smaller group was quite vocal about industry topics and committed to getting this chapter off the ground.

Long Island, NY - Early numbers show that Long Island will develop into a sizable chapter. Tom Englander of PPW has taken on the planning and hosting of the initial meetings and launch of this chapter - Thank you Tom!
New York and New Jersey folks met again in February to elect officers. See what happened in the next issue of The Buzz.
