NADRA Going GREEN?

NEW GREEN Committee Now Forming:

NADRA recognizes the importance in environmental awareness. This is why our "Green" committee is now forming. NADRA HQ will be making efforts in the weeks and months ahead to green its offices and events. If you have certain qualities and or knowledge that would benefit Green awareness in the decking industry, NADRA is asking for your help and participation.

Hi this is Gustavo de la Cruz from Barrett Contracting, a NADRA Charter Member. If you feel you have something to offer this newly forming committee please contact NADRA HQ or contact me directly. We are currently working on putting together NADRA's Guidelines for Green Deck Building. We are moving fast, and expect results as soon as DeckExpo 2008.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Gustavo de la Cruz

Why Build Green?
As seen at: http://www.epa.gov/greenbuilding/

 EPA Logo

In the United States, buildings account for:

39 % of total energy use
12 % of the total water consumption
68 % of total electricity consumption
38 % of the carbon dioxide emissions

A list of additional statistics on buildings and the environment (PDF) (5 pp., 66K, About PDF) is available.

The built environment has a vast impact on the environment, human health, and the economy. By adopting green building strategies, we can maximize both economic and environmental performance. Green construction methods can be integrated into buildings at any stage, from design and construction, to renovation and deconstruction. However, the most significant benefits can be obtained if the design and construction team takes an integrated approach from the earliest stages of a building project. Potential benefits of green building can include:

Environmental benefits

  • Enhance and protect biodiversity and ecosystems
  • Improve air and water quality
  • Reduce waste streams
  • Conserve and restore natural resources

Economic benefits

  • Reduce operating costs
  • Create, expand, and shape markets for green product and services
  • Improve occupant productivity
  • Optimize life-cycle economic performance

Social benefits

  • Enhance occupant comfort and health
  • Heighten aesthetic qualities
  • Minimize strain on local infrastructure
  • Improve overall quality of life

This program will provide a better understanding of what may cause a deck to fail and what a code compliant deck looks like. The International Residential Code and International Building Code have requirements for post and column supports, post-to-beam connections, bearing requirements for joists, stair treads, stringers and port-to guardrail connection requirements. This program will review the standards and methods used to satisfy those requirements. Also, we will review what causes corrosion of metal connectors and fasteners, and Simpson Strong-Tie guidelines when selecting the proper connector and fastener.

Objectives: After successfully completing this course you will be able to:
Identify common causes of deck failures
Put into practice standards and methods of code compliant connections
Choose fasteners and connectors for specific applications
NADRA Certification Course: Upon successfully passing the test offered at the end of this course, you will receive a certificate good for a period of three years for Deck Framing Connections as taught by Simpson Strong-Tie.

*Please Note: The course offered on January 29th, 2008 is free. This is a preliminary round. This will NOT be free in the future! This is a great opportunity, you don't want to miss it!

* Although you do not need to be a NADRA member to attend this seminar, you must be a current NADRA member in order to take the certification test.*
