"Limited Warranty" |
Builder Perspective
Letter to Manufacturers and Suppliers:
What's up with "Limited Warranty" requirements?
I want to be the best and most professional deck builder in East Tennessee. When I finish a project and go over the details of the new deck, including the railing, insert stone, outdoor kitchen, and arbor with shade, etc., I would like to be able to leave the homeowner with more than an invoice. My customers have usually visited my website at www.NADRA.org and cruised around the web for information on the various products they want to have me install. Often my customers locate the "Limited Warranty" for a product, and print it out and show it to me. Good work on my customer's part - but now I have a problem. Most Limited Warranties specify "Any claim must include proof-of-purchase". Unless I provide my customer with a copy of my statement from the supplier, I can't help them. The statements I have provide more information than is prudent to put into the hands of others. There has to be a better way. Can we get NADRA supplier members to provide NADRA deck builders with a form that meets the Limited Warranty "proof-of-purchase" requirement that we can provide to the supplier and hand over to our customers? Suppliers gain from this in two ways:
1. NADRA manufacturers and suppliers can track who is using their products, AND how much and what type they are using
2. NADRA builder members may be more inclined to use products that make it easy for them to make their customers happy.
For me, the customers will know that I am on top of things and protecting his investment.
How about it manufacturers and suppliers? It's really not asking too much, is it? Can we get together at the DeckExpo and get this done?

NADRA Member Event: Correct Building Products Invites NADRA's Executive VP to Speak at annual distributors meeting |

NADRA member, Correct Building Products held it annual distributors meeting on October 3rd and 4th at their corporate offices in Biddeford, Maine. Distributors from all over the U.S., Canada, and even as far away as Australia and Chili gathered for this event. Michael Beaudry, Executive Vice President for NADRA was the keynote speaker, providing the audience with a presentation on the growth of the decking industry and how reaching deck builders is key to selling more product to homeowners. Beaudry went on to explain how NADRA is making it easy for distributors to do just that - reach builders - through the formation of NADRA local chapters. Chapters provide a wonderful platform for getting builders and suppliers together to share information, for networking, and training. Martin Grohman, President of Correct Building Products said "We appreciate Mike's participation in our 5th annual CorrectDeck Distributor Retreat on behalf of NADRA. People really like the chapter concept, and we're going to be actively working with our distributors nationwide to support their formation. NADRA members are the premium decking contractors we prefer to work with."
Thank you to the great folks at Correct Building Products for inviting NADRA to speak. Please take a minute to check out CorrectDeck CX and their new stonewashed colors at www.correctdeck.com. Please see the members only section of www.NADRA.org for a copy of the presentation given to Correct Building Products.

Canadian Chapter Update |

Ontario, Canada Chapter Update The NADRA Ontario Chapter held another meeting on September 13, 2007. The meeting included a presentation and question/answer session by Dean Findlay, an Ontario building inspector, on building code and the function of building inspectors. Findlay mentioned that the Building Officials in Canada are lobbying to become self-managed so that they could promote more uniform enforcement across Ontario. He also gave NADRA credit for starting an organization that could be used as a voice for the deck builders and stated that he did not realize how big some of the concerns were. Findlay suggested that the Home Builders Association in Canada be approached to get their assistance in lobbying the government for code changes, indicated that a letter to the president of the Ontario Building Officials Association outlining deck builder concerns would be a good idea, and also suggested approaching the Ministry of Housing and Affairs to hear builders concerns. Findlay encouraged the Ontario Chapter to try as many avenues as possible to increase the potential for success in improving the system for code development and enforcement in Ontario. Election of officers for the Ontario Chapter was also held at this meeting.
Elected officers are: President - John Vitetta - Sunset Decks Vice President - Steve Steinburg - Stone Mountain Fence and Deck Centres Treasurer - John Overington - Amazing Decks Secretary - Stan Weiland - Hickory Dickory Decks.

Code Corner |

Mike and Ray Kechley of Cable Railing gave Hanson a tour of their fabrication facility in
neighboring Carson City.
Packed with plenty of activities, this year's International Code Council Annual Conference was held in Reno, Nevada, September 30-October 3. Each year the ICC holds its annual meeting in conjunction with a full education slate, committee meetings, and an expo. Diana Hanson, your Administrative Director, and Codes and Standards Committee Chairman attended part of the week to network with industry and ICC members on issues of interest to the decking industry.
Newly elected ICC Board President Steve Shapiro made reference to decking not once, but twice during his acceptance speech at the ICC Annual Banquet. It is obvious that our little niche industry is no longer "little" or a "niche". Code involvement is a must at every level for our industry. NADRA encourages your involvement in code development. Please see the member's only section of www.NADRA.org for more information.
The Expo contained over 100 booths, including a few NADRA members, namely Arch Wood Protection, DeckLok Bracket System, Fastenmaster, and Simpson Strong-Tie. Hanson also attended the Code Technical Meeting on October 4 - 5 where the issue of climbable guards is still being debated. NADRA members, Cable Railing and Artistic Railing both had representatives in attendance at the CTC meeting. |

No Novels in Cyberspace - Concise Email Communications
Businesses are burdened with an ever increasing flow of incoming email messages - making sure that YOUR messages get read takes a little know-how.
Tips: 4 Ways to Get Read
1. Use the Subject line to clearly identify the topic of the email.
This gets the message opened.
2. Keep it short! If it looks like a book - it will get shelved -
This gets the reader to decide to read it.
3. Organize your thoughts using paragraphs with open line spaces in between.
This gets the reader to keep reading it.
4. Make your sentences no more than 20 words each.
This helps the reader to understand it.
Using these tips, your emails will be read and understood by more people. This will cut down on time spent dealing with communications that "never made it" and related follow-up (and sometimes "clean-up") making you more efficient.
