Greetings! |
We hope that you are having a busy deck season, and that the Summer has been profitable for you! Christmas decorations have been spotted in the stores already, so that must mean we are heading into Fall. For some members that means a slight decrease in the frenzied work life they have been living for the past few months - for others - the fun just never stops... So, either way, take a break for a few minutes and enjoy The Buzz...
Sincerely,

Two Sure Fire
Ways to Irritate the People you Email:
1. Overuse the "High" priority option
Flagging an outgoing email as a High Priority should be sparingly reserved for real emergencies. Much like the boy who cried "Wolf!" when overused, High Priority becomes an unwelcome alert that may even cause your email to be ignored by the recipient. If the message is that important maybe picking up the phone and reinforcing the urgency is a better idea.
2. Request Delivery Confirmation
Most of us get a lot of emails during the day. Asking the email recipient to confirm that they got YOUR email just annoys them. It annoys them BEFORE they even read what you've sent. If your email is asking them to do something, they are going to be annoyed before they even know what you want - Not a very effective method of getting cooperation. Besides unless there is a "burp" in the Internet, most likely your email reached its destination.
So, if you do these irritating things - STOP IT. Your people will appreciate it and they will be more responsive. | |

ONTARIO CANADA UPDATE
Hello fellow NADRA members
I wanted to give everyone a brief update on the Ontario chapter of NADRA. This is the second local chapter started and the first in Canada. We have had three formal meetings to date over the last 8 months, and we are planning our next meeting in September/07. At this meeting we will elect our local President etc. So far our mix is about half deck contractors and half suppliers.
Our number one issue is to gather information and assist in improving the Ontario building code issues, which have changed drastically in the last eighteen months. Today in over half the areas of Ontario you need AUTO CAD drawings, signed off by a licensed deck designer before a building permit can be obtained. On any railings a structural engineer must test and stamp the structural drawings before they can be built. These changes have definitely affected both the builders and suppliers and as a group we hope to get educated and then start the long process to improving this system.
We see many fantastic benefits of starting a local NADRA chapter and I would be more than happy to discuss these with anyone thinking about starting a chapter in your area. Remember we all need to drive membership if this organization is to grow and thrive.
All the best in the coming months. Tom Jacques President - Hickory Dickory Decks
NADRA in ... Germany?
Ken Trainor, NADRA - "Far" Eastern Ambassador
I have to tell you all about my resent trip to Germany. I went to Sinzheim, Germany to visit with the founding company of the pressure treated wood industry; Dr. Wolman GmbH. Sinzheim is located in the South Western side of Germany in the Rhine river valley. My induction included a trip out to see a treater customer, Braun & Wurfele, based in the Black Forest area. I met with the owner, J. Wurfele, who informed me he was just visiting the U.S., Las Vegas, where he attended the Deck Expo. Here I am in the middle of the Black Forest having a discussion about the Deck Expo and the value of becoming a NADRA member. I gave him a NADRA business card and asked him to review our website. J. Wurfele has his trip and interviews with Southland Fence & Supply as part of his company's newsletter. You can visit J. Wurfele's website at www.braun-Wuerfele.de it is in Germany but look to the left side and click on the English text button. And here is his newsletter. So now NADRA is an international association!
New Chapter Forming in Texas!
NEW CHAPTER FORMING IN CENTRAL TEXAS!
NADRA Member, TimberTown, USA, an outdoor deck building supplier based in Leander, TX, celebrated its one year anniversary with an open house on August 24th, 2007. More than 15 of the industry's leading deck building distributors and product manufacturers sponsored the event.
TimberTown, USA Co-owner Steve Anthony said " The best of the best in deck building will be in Leander which says a lot about our industry and the growing central Texas market. The Trex Road Show, which goes to large markets like Los Angeles and Chicago, is stopping in Leander." TimberTown, USA and its sponsors ended the day's events by hosting a BBQ for deck building professionals.
Timbertown USA also used this event as a platform to bring deck builders together to start a NADRA Texas Chapter. Steve Anthony commented that he has wanted to start a chapter in Texas since joining NADRA in 2005. We expect to hear more on this forming Texas Chapter in the near future, and will be sure to let you know.

CODE CORNER: |
What is an "approved" building product?
Manufacturers of building products may voluntarily go through testing processes with industry testing bodies such as ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials), or Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for example. These organizations do technical evaluations of building products, components, methods, and materials. If it is found that the subject of an evaluation complies with existing code of standards requirements, then a report to that effect is published and made available to the public. The reports are intended mainly to help agencies that enforce building code, by assisting them to determine code compliance.
Local building code sets forth the acceptable building materials for that jurisdiction. Often, materials which have gone through certain testing processes are required. If a product has successfully gone through an evaluation process, or meets code requirements (American Wood-Preservers'Association Standards (AWPA), for example), it is usually labeled as such.
Note that most cities and townships adopt their own building codes. Most include all or part of International Code Council (ICC) model codes: International Building Code (IBC), the International Residential Code (IRC), International Fire Code (IFC) for example. In general, each city or township is free to adopt code, and/or modify it, as they see fit, however a few states have adopted statewide code.
Enforcement is generally at a local level, through the work of building inspectors. Since requirements vary so much it is important to check out what is required in the location you are working in - Be Smart - Know Your Code!
NADRA in Boise, Idaho!
Your Administrative director, Diana Hanson, attended the Fall Technical Meeting of the American Wood Preservers Association (AWPA), in her home town of Boise, Idaho. NADRA attends these meetings in an effort to promote the decking industry and to encourage the production of the kinds of materials needed by deck builders. NADRA also hopes these efforts will expand the variety of decking material manufacturers and dealers exhibiting at DeckExpo (March 4 - 7, 2008 in Orlando, Florida).
Board member Ken Trainor of BASF was also in Boise with his BASF colleagues, several of whom traveled from Germany for the meetings.
As a result of this conference, NADRA was able to learn much about both current and developing methods of treatment for both wood and composite materials.
Your trade association is undertaking a project to produce a document which describes the various treated wood products available, as well as their stated uses.
NADRA expects to have this document ready for members by DeckExpo in March 2008. If you would like to participate in the development of this information piece, please contact Diana Hanson at Diana.Hanson@gmail.com or call NADRA at 1.888.623.7248. |
