What Are You Waiting For? TabbedOut Comes to the Dream.
Tabbed OutEver wanted the convenience of seeing what's on your dinner check while you're still eating, or how many mimosas you've had at brunch before you even get your creme brulee? And then to be able to pay your tab without ever handing over your credit card or waiting for the server to drop the check?

At our Uptown location, you can. We're now using the TabbedOut service - a smartphone app that allows you to open, monitor, and pay your tab all from the palm of your hand. Visit www.tabbedout.com for more information.
Get to Know Your Dream Cafe Servers
Ivan Jasso
Every Dream Cafe server has a story to tell. As you hopefully have guessed, they all have lives outside of the restaurant. Many are pursuing other dreams while serving at the Dream.
Ivan
For this issue, we talked to Ivan Jasso who, when not delivering delicious eclectic fare to our patrons, pursues an acting career. He's been getting roles since 2004.

"I decided to go into acting because, in middle school, I was in the choir," Ivan explains. "Not because I wanted to be, but because I followed some friends into it. But [the choir] put on a show every year and I really enjoyed it."

"But I didn't pursue it until after high school, and then I went to KD Studio, an actor's conservatory."

Ivan's roles have included plays, commercials, corporate training videos, independent films, and modeling for print ads. You might have seen him in commercials and ads for 7-11, FedEx Kinko's or others.

"My favorite role was at the Kitchen Dog Theater in Uptown," he says. "A play called 'Long Way Go Down' by Zayd Dohrn. I played a Mexican Immigrant who tries to get himself and his girlfriend across the border, but can't pay, so he has to put the girlfriend up as collateral. Kind of a bad guy role, but it was fun to play."

Ivan is currently appearing in dual roles - Jose and Mr. Toot - in the Dallas Children's Theater production of "Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells!" based on the popular children's book series. The play runs from November 19 - December 23 at the DCT Rosewood Center, Baker Theater.

Ivan is signed with Mary Collins Agency for bookings.

History Lesson
Why, Exactly, is it Called "The Dream Cafe"?
As described briefly in our story about the Dream Cafe origins, owner Mary O'Brien was originally hired to manage a Tofutti store called Dessert Dreams. The store struggled for about a year, during which time Mary became a partner in the business. When the original owner decided to call it quits, Mary offered to take over the lease and reconcept. With very little money to put into it, she opted to recruit her five brothers and sisters and simply paint the walls and add white table cloths. Expanding beyond desserts, the place needed a new name also, but it was too expensive to buy a new sign, so Mary just had a neon sign vendor take the "Dessert" and the "s" off the sign and add the word "Cafe," and voila; a Dream was born.
