Provenance

Dolly

The one big word in the antiques business is provenance.  It means the origin or source, particularly WHO owned something.  The WHO is very important.  The fact that your grandmother owned something may not be very important at all, but if your grandmother was SOMEBODY, then what she owned makes a difference to a lot of people.  The item may be identical to what someone else owned.  In fact, it may be what millions of people owned, but if that one item was touched by a special someone, then it has a special characteristic.  Provenance can transform a simple bag of golf clubs by seismographic proportions.  A $500 set of four MacGregor woods and a Wilson 2 wood in a red and white golf bag brought over $700,000.  Guess why?  Provenance.

The golf clubs belonged to John F. Kennedy.  They were sold at the Sotheby's Estate Sale of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
(JFK was good at a lot of things, but he was no Tiger Woods!)

Side Bar:
Those famous golf clubs were purchased by Arnold Schwarzenegger, husband of Kennedy niece Maria Shriver.

This is from the book, "Betcaha Didn't Know That" by Leon Castner & Brian Kathenes. www.ValueThisRadio.com.

Note: A quantity of hair from Elvis Presley just sold at an auction in Chicago for $18,300.

Greetings!

I just attended the unveiling of a sculpture at our local area maintained by the Master Gardeners and was inspired by the speech of the mayor of Kill Devil Hills. He talked about how culture and art expresses our uniqueness and creative spirit. How it helps to humanize us in our current environment of technology. The media and corporate America endeavors to homogenize our landscape while art celebrates the individual.

I hope that this inspires you to celebrate your uniqueness!
Vampires Are Here!

Sunset Romance

Halloween is the time for ghosts and goblins!  This holiday was introduced to North America by Irish immigrants in the 1840's.  Today we celebrate by wearing celebrate by wearing costumes, trick or treating, having a party and visiting haunted houses.

It is the perfect time to announce the arrival of Fiendish Fans from Nightmare Before Christmas. This film has developed a cult following. The Walt Disney Classics figurines has created some wonderful characters from this film.  This figurine was created in a limited edition of 750.  We only have this one piece available and the edition has sold out. You can see this at Vampires.
Artist, EM Corsa Benefit Auction

Sea Snail

Elizabeth Corsa is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and she is facing mounting medical costs. A benefit auction is planned for Nov. 14 at the auction house that used to be Lance's Restaurant. There will be a Friday night preview. An important part of this auction is that it will produce seed money for an account that is being set up to help artists in the community who become in need of financial assistance. This fund for artists was Liz's idea, and it's her dream that the fund go on for years to come.  Many responsible people, including Liz, have insurance but still cannot make ends meet when tragedy strikes. Artists are particularly vulnerable due to working for themselves and creating all their products by hand.

A fund has also been arranged at OBX Bank in Kitty Hawk to help defray her expenses.  If you would prefer donating directly, contributions can be made in person at OBX Bank in Kitty Hawk or mailed, with checks made out to "Elizabeth Corsa" to

Express Yourself with Pins

pin

Jewelry is not only a "girl's best friend" but can make a powerful political and symbolic statement. Madeleine Albright demonstrates this with her collection of pins that are being exhibited at the Museum of Arts & Design in NY. A book about her brooch collection is also being released. She was able to communicate her mood  just by which pin she chose to wear that day. The collection is not valuable in terms of being gold or gems because most were inexpensive pieces that she picked up during her travels. This shows that you don't need a lot of money to create a great collection.

Just think of what you could communicate to your friends and loved ones just by choosing which pin to wear each day.  Feeling powerful, wear a lion or romantic, wear a rose. The possibilities are endless and are a reflection of your personal style.

Illustrated is a gold tone Flower pin.  You can see a nice selection of pins in our shop on Ruby Lane

We look forward to hearing from you!
