Letter from yogaHOPE founder Sue Jones
Greetings! There is so much to be thankful for here at yogaHOPE. Our volunteer teachers continue to offer amazing classes at seven facilities in the Boston area and on a recent trip to Kripalu, one of our teachers ran into a student that he'd taught at Women's Hope. She had relapsed shortly after leaving Women's Hope, but during her next round of rehab, she kept thinking about the yoga classes yogaHOPE had offered. She began practicing regularly and now works at the gift shop at Kripalu. It's stories like this that keep us motivated to offer the best programming we possibly can. The last year and a half has been dedicated to delving into research on yoga and trauma, and I am thrilled to say that we are in the completion stages for our TIMBo (Trauma Informed Mind Body) program! This program is a defined curriculum that will be more targeted to the women we serve and more effective in breaking the cycles of trauma. We look forward to offering trainings for this program through a local pilot, then throughout the region, and hopefully on a national level. In September I co-led a self care retreat for First Responders in Haiti. Kripalu donated space for these doctors, counsellors and health professionals to gather, practice, and learn how to heal from the effects of secondary trauma. The success of this program has lead to a 6 part workshop series in Self Care at Partners in Health here in Boston. It's programs like this that speak to the growing realization in the mainstream health industry that mind body practices are not only useful, but crucial in maintaining mental and emotional health. With the roll out of the Trauma Informed Mind-Body (TIMBo) Program, yogaHOPE aims to work with facilities and programs so that they may offer the most comprehensive, integrated and continuous system of care for their populations. By traveling, training and supporting individuals and groups first locally, and with potential to expand nationally, this program will reach hundreds, if not thousands more individuals every year.
We're so excited about our change and growth. Please consider donating to yogaHOPE to further this work. Thank you for being a part of the yogaHOPE family. With love, Suzanne Jones yogaHOPE

Harvard Medical Conducts Study on YogaHOPE's Effectiveness
We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Sat Bir Khalsa of Harvard Medical School launching a study on yogaHOPE's work and its effectiveness. This IRB approved study will provide much feedback for our work and measures of our progress. This is an amazing means for yogaHOPE to determine our efficacy and to provide the best possible programing for our underserved women.
The study will evaluate the effectiveness of the yogaHOPE program in achieving the following program outcomes:
a) Upon completion of the yogaHOPE program, participants will report an improvement in mental health status such as mood and affect (e.g., increases in positive affect, lower levels of depression, anxiety, emotional lability) and levels of resiliency, psychosocial functioning, sleep quality, perceived stress, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), etc. b) There will be a statistically significant correlation between the degree of practice and the differences in the outcomes above.
If you are interested in being a part of our study team, please contact Sue Jones at info@yogahope.org |
