Greetings, In this issue we explore the Hiring of Technology professionals. With money being tight and the need to watch every dollar, it is tempting to hire a friend, a "son's roommate" or a "doing it on the side" person to handle your Internet and technology needs, but this is short-sighted at best. Like every industry you get what you pay for, but it is even more critical with web site development, network administration and other functions. A poorly designed website can actually damage your company's reputation. A loss of files and e-mails can cripple a company. If content and graphics are not maintained or managed, it can cause a lost sale or worse. An unsatisfied client is easy prey for your competitors. Now more than ever you should hire qualified professionals for these tasks. We've created a list of questions and answers that can help you to do just that. Let me know if you need more details.
Thanks and we will look forward to hearing from you,
Pam Gockley

| Guideline for Hiring Technology Personnel |
5 Questions & Answers to ask a Website Developer 1) How long have you been in business? We recommend at least 5 years specializing in the Internet industry; print graphic design does not count. 2) Who will be creating the design work and where will it be created? In-house site and graphic designers are best and generally respond in a timely manner. 3) What web statistics do you offer? A good stats program is priceless for marketing analysis. 4) Can I view your current published websites? Take the time to navigate the sites, do they make sense? Don't be overly impressed by visual 'razzle-dazzle'. What counts are things such as are they easy to navigate, is it easy to get the information that you want, is the information presented in a clean and concise manner? 5) What results can I expect from the Internet? There are no guarantees, but prior experience and years in the Internet industry are good indicators of good results. At Vigilant, we have been in the Internet web site business since 1997.
5 Questions & Answers to ask a Network Administrator (NA)
1) How long have you been in business? We recommend at least 5 years experience specializing in the computer networking industry, and hardware and software applications. Less then 5 years can be risky. If you need help, contact us here at Vigilant and we can recommend experienced, qualified network administrators. 2) Do you have references? Request references from any potential NA and check them. Also, research and ask your network of business associates for any input. 3) During the interview, we can't seem to understand your language. A good NA will be able to communicate to you in layman's terms. 4) Is it important to be MicroSoft (MS) certified? While being Microsoft certified is usually a good thing, be aware that many MS certified NA's almost exclusively re-sell MS products. This means they make a percentage off of the software or hardware they sell to your company. Beware of being locked into unnecessary products and being sold products and services your company does not want or need. Sometimes there are lower-cost alternatives to Microsoft products that will serve your needs as well. Making commissions is strong motivation to suggest unnecessary hardware and software purchases. We deal with companies that unfortunately have been oversold on both hardware and software. 5) What is the length and scope of the contract? Be careful of being tied into lengthy, restrictive contracts. For example, can you get out of the contract early if you're not satisfied with them? Can other NA's work on the systems they install or will it void any warranties? |

ALL CAPS, Passive-Aggressive Copying
Top Etiquette Experts' Electronic Don'ts List
Office e-mail offenders. Everyone has them, from people who excessively "reply all" (annoying) to colleagues who copy your boss when criticizing you (rude). Experts identified the most offensive e-mail moves and how to avoid making them yourself.
Netiquette No-No #1: The Passive-Aggressive Copy As e-mail has become the predominant language of corporate culture, political minefields have developed about things seemingly as arcane as who you copy on an e-mail. And don't deny you haven't done it yourself: You want to make sure your colleague pays attention to your request, so you copy their boss. It may feel satisfying at the time, but etiquette experts say it could come back to bite you. "'CC-ing' is a very tricky area. If you cc someone's boss on a criticism, it takes it from Def Con 3 to Def Con 1," says Will Schwalbe, the co-author of "Send: The Essential Guide to Email for Office and Home." "It's an incredibly hostile act." Although it sounds simple, Schwalbe suggests asking the person you're communicating with before copying anyone. "Ask permission before including someone in on a conversation if there's a chance that it will cause unhappiness," he advises. "You have to be especially careful when there's a thread when you cc someone because now there's an entire thread that's available." Rachel, a 27-year-old analyst in Washington, D.C., says the "cc-ing" behavior of her bosses left her feeling micromanaged.
I hate that. Actually, that type of behavior is the reason I quit my [former] job," she says. "Every time I sent a correspondence to any one in the firm, my manager made me cc her on it. ... I feel like I'm being judged."
