2008 CEO Global Study
IBM Research
CEO Study Learning leaders play a key role in strategy development and implementation, working closely with CEOs and C-level teams to improve individual, team, and organisational effectiveness.

Consequently, they need to gain a deeper understanding of strategy, build leadership skills, and better communicate the importance of learning to other leaders.

Through interviews with 1,130 business and public sector leaders worldwide in 45 countries, the IBM Global CEO Study provides new and compelling perspectives on strategic issues such as global integration, new and changing customer groups, and business model innovation that face organisations of all sizes.

This study is a must read for all HR and Learning leaders.
According to the research only those organisations that understand and prepare to address the new realities of the integrated market will be able to harvest its full potential. The enterprise of the future is:
  • Hungry for change and capable of changing quickly and successfully. However, there is a gap of 22% between how CEOs rate their ability to manage change successfully versus their expected need for it. This gap has nearly tripled since 2006 (it was 8% then)
  • Innovative beyond customer imagination; surpassing customer expectation through deep collaborative relationships
  • Globally integrated and strategically designed to access and apply the best capabilities, knowledge and assets from anywhere in the world - CEOs have moved beyond the cliché of globalisation
  • Disruptive by nature because of radically changing business models. More than 40% are changing the enterprise models to be more collaborative
  • Genuine not just generous and reflecting true concern for society in all actions and decisions.

Generation F: Attract, Engage, Retain
Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency Report
Female

There are clear discrepancies between what women are looking for in a workplace and what they are experiencing in reality, according to recent research released  by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA).

The report draws attention to crucial areas where business is failing to meet the needs of women aged between 16 and 65 - Generation F - in the workplace.

Key findings of the report include:
  • 22% of women do not feel their workplace recognises the needs of working parents
  • Three quarters of Generation F want opportunities for promotion and progression, but only 49% say their organisation provides them this opportunity
  • Over a third of women left their last job because of a lack of career development and progression
  • Almost 20% of women indicate that they intend to leave their jobs to start up their own business in the next few years, while only 14% of women plan to leave the workforce to have children
  • Supportive bosses and management is important for 90% of women seeking a job, but only 64% say that this is true of their workplace
  • Learning and development is important for 83% but less than two-thirds say their workplace provides this
  • 7% of women left their last job because of an unfair distribution of pay among employees in the same role
  • 83% of women are looking for an organisation that genuinely supports work-life balance, but only 58% say they have found it.
  • Only 55% of women say their workplace has a good organisational record of promoting and supporting women
  • Only 51% of women say their organisation has a large number of women in senior positions
The report also provides a number of business tips and case examples about how best to support Generation F so as to become an employer of choice for women.

2008 Corporate FactBook
Bersin and Associates
Global SurveyIn a survey of almost 1,000 HR executives and professionals, Bersin & Associates recently found that most companies are experiencing a shortage of qualified leaders at all levels. These leadership gaps are creating talent challenges for companies worldwide.

Finding include:
  • The U.S. economy is clearly under stress. In the last six months, cost-cutting has become the top business issue in U.S. businesses. By contrast, in Europe and Asia where economies continue to expand, organisations are focused on managing business change and dealing with competitive threats
  • The average spending per learner is $1,202, a figure that is roughly equivalent to expenditure last year. The highest spending sector is finance and insurance ($1,061 per learner) and the lowest is retail ($594 per learner)
  • Key shortages in qualified line managers, business unit executives, sales staff, and IT professionals continue to challenge businesses globally. These shortages are more acute in Asia and Europe than in the United States
  • Reliance on outsourcing continues to increase in two categories: the use of outside instructors and custom content development
  • Only 38% of organisations have a clear talent management strategy in place to deal with these issues; 37% are just getting started; 27% have no strategy in place at all
  • Skills shortages also appear within corporate human resources. Only 15% of surveyed executives believe their organisations have the necessary skills in place to deal with current talent challenges. Twenty-three percent rate their organisations as unprepared
  • Many organisations are planning software purchases to help address talent management problems. Twenty-three percent of those surveyed say their companies are considering purchases of recruiting software and 19% are currently shopping for performance management software
These findings are extensively discussed in the company's most recent research study, 2008 Talent Management Factbook: Global Trends, Facts, and Strategies in Corporate Talent Management.

Engaging with the new eLearning
An Adobe Whitepaper by Allison Rossett and Antonia Chan - 2008
eLearningIn this recent whitepaper distributed by Training Industry Inc, you will discover how the new eLearning is raising the bar by making programs interactive, relevant, engaging, and compelling.

The authors discuss a dozen strategies that are being used to make eLearning that next big killer application for the Internet that John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems, predicted way back in 1999.

Early eLearning programs caused many of us think about asynchronous, monotonous, page turning, downright boring programs when we contemplated eLearning. In some instances audio was added for a few minutes. But, that's not what eLearning is about anymore.

The new eLearning is about action, involvement, collaboration, and engagement delivered using a bunch of exciting technologies including podcasts, blogs, e-coaching, wikis, Second Life, mobile devices, video streaming, web conferencing, simulations, and serious gaming.
