Hi Everybody!
I've just returned from 10 days in South Florida where I taught English
to automechanics in Hialeah and trained Spanish-speaking teachers who
teach English in Miami. South Florida is its own cultural experience.
Except when teaching and training, I spoke Spanish everywhere and with
everybody. This is what makes it so difficult for those automechanics
and the students in the Miami school to learn English. It's not that
they don't want to. Some have been trying for years. One of the
biggest stumbling blocks is fear: fear of making a fool of yourself,
fear of sounding stupid, fear of being rejected, not understood, etc.
Those of you who study with us have a copy of our 7 strategies, which we
have been giving out for years. READ IT! We have included it again in
this newsletter. I also have a new book to recommend called Language is
Music by Susanna Zaraysky. It has 70 tips and activities to help you
learn another language.
I'd love to hear about other ideas and tips you have. Meanwhile, let's
enjoy different cultures. And I didn't even tell you about the food!
Bandeja Paisa, churasco con yuca, Colombian, Cuban, Spanish . . . . . Oh
yeah, and the weather was better than here.
On another note, the Salamanca, Spain trip is taking shape. If you'd like to join me see detail below.

7 Strategies for Language Learning
|
|
Here are a few simple suggestions that can
help you learn more easily. Try them and
see what works for you.
1. Go for the gist!
Don't try to understand every word,
whether you are listening or reading unless you are at an advanced level. Go for the general idea and respond as best
you can.
2. Use language you know.
Use language in the target language
even if it isn't exactly what you mean, rather than be frustrated hunting for
language you don't know. The point is
usually to use the language, not to be absolutely accurate with your
information. If asked a question, answer
with whichever words you know. Indicate
that you understand the question or say that you don't in the target language.
3. Don't translate as a rule.
Of course you will translate
occasionally, but if you translate word for word as a rule, you will develop a
crutch that is almost impossible to lose.
Listen to your classmates and it will probably become clear.
4. Use new vocabulary and structures.
Force new vocabulary and structures
into conversation so it will become part of what you know and not stay on the
list that you keep meaning to study. Use
the lists in class.
5. Keep your verb charts and lists
handy.
You don't have to memorize
everything. Use your lists. They're even more helpful if you don't have
everything translated. Pictures or icons
help you remember new words. Time lines
help you remember tenses. There is no
such thing as cheating in our classes! Do what works.
6. Trust your teacher. Trust yourself.
There will be a time for a reality
check, questions, feedback. Jot down
problems and questions and go with the flow until those times.
7. Have the courage to make mistakes!
This
is how we learn and it helps the teacher prepare the class.
Take
risks. Have fun. Laugh!

Consider hosting an International Student
ILI's Home-stay Program
ILI's Home-stay Program brings it's Intensive English Program (IEP) students
into the community to stay with area hosts and experience U.S. culture
in a warm and friendly environment.
This program matches area hosts with international students
who come from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds and are
enrolled full-time in our Intensive English Program
in Northampton. Programs are held year-round and students can sign up
to study from 4 weeks to 12 months. Average length of home-stays are
usually two to three months. Hosts are expected to provide a
private room, a warm and friendly environment for our students and be
within walking distance to the school or on a bus route. A
weekly stipend is provided.
