SUMMER READING ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Smart writers and captivating stories - when you find this rare combination it is good to share. These are 4 of my favorite books in case you still need summer reading material.
A FORTUNE TELLER TOLD ME by Tiziano Terzani
When I was in Hong Kong my friend Pete told me about this book everyone was reading. He said it changed his life. WOW! Can a book do all that? A Fortune Teller Told Me is about a journalist who was warned after seeing a Hong Kong fortune teller not to fly for one year or run the risk of dying in a tragic plane accident. Although a disbeliever of fortune tellers, he decides to travel by foot, boat, bus, car and train throughout Asia for one year and the journey changed his life. The writer would have crashed and died had he been on a fateful plane trip he previously planned.
LOVE IN A FALLEN CITY by Eileen Chang
Before my trip to Mainland China a few years ago this book was suggested to set the tone. I read it during the trip to Shanghai and Beijing and couldn't put it down. Eileen Chang is considered one of the great writers of 20th century China and this book of short stories does not disappoint. "Lust, Caution" is one her stories that was turned into an Academy Award winning film directed by Ang Lee. Eileen moved from China to Los Angeles later in life and taught. She passed away here in her 80's leaving a legacy of beautiful writing.

SHANTARAM by Gregory David Roberts
Okay - so I can't believe this book has been out for awhile and I never knew about it. It's probably the longest book I have ever attempted (933 pages) but I am riveted by this tale of Bombay and can't put it down. Since I was in India last year, I know every place and nuance of his adventure (maybe not the living in the slum part) which makes it specifically intriguing to me. Based on a true story of an escaped convict living in India - I am halfway through and never want it to end. |
