Art in the Streets at Geffen Contemporary at MOCA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Super exciting news from downtown Los Angeles - the most anticipated art exhibition in years to hit Los Angeles opens next week, "Art in the Streets." It's at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA as new Director Jeffrey Deitch's project that's been 30 years in the making. According to Patti Astor's memoir, she was standing next to Jeffrey Deitch in the FUN Gallery in NYC 1982 when Jeffrey turned to her and said, "Patti, one day there will be a recreation of this in a museum."
The reason I'm in on any of this is because from 1979-82 I was at NYU Film School and graffiti artist Zephyr was my boyfriend - Queen of the Underground Film Scene Patti Astor was my inspiration. So basically, I was around when the famous graffiti/hip hop/breakdancing scene was going full steam in NYC. My cameras went everywhere with me and without realizing it - I documented a very famous moment in time.
A few of my photographs are in the FUN Gallery section of the exhibition. I also have a few shots in the Rizzoli catalogue and my book The Tipster Chronicles is on sale in the MOCA gift shop and on my website. There are tags, 'major burners' and pictures of my friends at their art openings; Fab 5 Freddy, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Patti Astor, Dondi White, Revolt, Haze, Charlie Ahearn and Zephyr.
As graffiti artists start arriving from all parts the globe for the show, and preparing their sections, painting murals, and installations it's very electric down there. You can get a behind-the-scenes sneak peek on my Facebook page.
