LOVE AT THE TAJ WITH A RAJ
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  The TAJ MAHAL is the crown jewel of any India trip. You push your way through the crowd at 6am sunrise to capture the perfect shot of yourself with the famous tomb because it's your once-in-a-lifetime moment. The story of the Taj is the story of a great love between the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is about how she charmed him to love her (it goes on and on and is worth reading about.) Mumtaz was nineteen and the Shah was twenty when they married. Sadly, she died in childbirth and on her deathbed she had him make three promises: - not to marry again - officially
- take care of the children (14 of them)
- immortalize their love, by lavishing the world with a memorial
After a day of sightseeing in the "City of Love" I took myself to the ultra chic OBEROI HOTEL with a magnificent view of the Taj Mahal. I left my travel pal, Chester, back at our hotel because he wasn't feeling well (I told him to be careful of the Indian food). I was wined and dined by the entire staff - probably because I was the only single lady in a romantic setting.
It was here I had a titilating conversation with RATIN CHHIBBER (manager of the restaurant). With his slightly turned up bushy mustache, piercing black eyes and a super cool turban, he melted the bindi off my forehead. Ratin gave me the VIP tour of the kitchen, had me pose for a picture with the chef and sat me on stage where I got to play the SANTOR (Indian xylophone) with a famous musician. It was a truly magical night where I felt like a princess. For my Taj story Ratin is my dashing Arabian knight from the city of love. In real life, I have selectively deleted the part where he introduces me to his "companion" (the polite Indian phrase for girlfriend). Yes - love was in the air at the Taj Mahal!
FORTUNE TELLER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Returning to my hotel (not nearly as glam) after dinner I made a bee-line for the soothsayer in the lobby to have my fortune told. Good thing Mr. Vijay Agarwal worked until midnight because I needed a love prediction! A Barberella in India is a fortune teller, astrologer and palm reader all wrapped up into one. Famous for his predictions of the future he starred into my eyes while holding my left palm up and told me about a great love coming into my life. How did he know I just met Ratin at the Oberoi? "Karma is Karma. When you are supposed to meet the love of your life - you meet. Nothing else to do." Well, that was quite refreshing! A Fortune Teller who believes that meeting true love is Karma - very Indian! So in conclusion, whether you have met your Raj of Romance or hanging solo this year - Happy Valentine's Day! |
