PERMIT STATE PARKS' BEST HOPE IN FACE OF TAX FUNDING LOSS
Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-San Juan Islands, has introduced Senate Bill 5622 that, if successful, will help to keep a state park system available to the public and maintain recreation programs run by the Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). A companion bill, House Bill 1796, is sponsored by Rep. Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim. Senate Bill 5622 addresses the continued demand for recreation opportunities and seeks to replace lost tax support for recreation with a "user-pay" approach. The bill would create a single $30 annual vehicle "Discover Pass" (or a $10 day-use pass) that would provide pass holders access to parks, WDFW and DNR recreation lands. More |

LEVEL 2 KAYAKING INSTRUCTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP Washington State Parks, the US Coast Guard and the American Canoe Association are cooperating on a pilot program to increase the number of nationally certified canoeing and kayaking instructors. The concept is to build the state's capacity in partnership with the ACA to reach and teach leaders in community recreation programs and public organizations associated with human-powered boating activities such as canoeing, kayaking, fishing and hunting. Ultimately this effort will extend statewide to provide entry level paddlesports users an opportunity to develop safe boating skills in their own community. More |
