The public relations committee is seeking articles for the spring issue of the WRPA Today magazine which will be distributed early April. Deadline for content is February 3, 2011. We are additionally interested in aquatic and athletic/fitness content specifically for this issue. Both the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Coalition and Transportation Choices lobby days are on February 10. As sponsors and partners, WRPA is joining these events to continue to speak passionately about the WWRP projects and to protect transit, biking and walking programs.

WRPA LEGISLATIVE Report - Week 3
From a WRPA perspective, we had a very positive Week 3. Our folks made strong pitches for WWRP funding, Healthy & Sustainable Communities, and more; our "complete streets" bill passed out of the House Transportation Committee; and our "league fees" legislation has been scheduled for a Week 4 hearing. Following is a more detailed look at the status of our priority issues and others, and a rundown of a few Week 3 hearings. ON THE MOVE Sarah Olson (Lynnwood Parks & Recreation) reports it's been nothin' but a zoo here. She has a new found appreciation for all her friends who are parents; it's a total mind freak on so many levels. 2011 AWARDS - CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
WRPA has seven primary awards to recognize organizations and individuals (volunteers and professionals) for their contributions to the Park and Recreation field. WRPA also offers a variety of Spotlight Awards to recognize excellence in park and recreation projects, services and media. Nominations are due by February 11, 2011. More |
HELP FEED CHILDREN Apply for the 2011 NRPA Serving Communities Grant
NRPA, through a gift from the Walmart Foundation, is pleased to announce the NRPA Serving Communities grant which will help to increase the number of children receiving nutritious meals through park and recreation programs. 2011 grants will be distributed to 15 park and recreation agencies. Agencies participating as 2010 grantees are invited to apply for additional funding, though an emphasis will be placed on new applicants. This is a one-year grant, concluding in May 2012. Grant amounts will vary between $25,000 - $50,000 per agency and funding is to be used to support the goal of increasing the number of children receiving nutritious meals. More Applications are due by February 15, 2011. |

GROUPS SUE OVER AIR POLUTION AT NATIONAL PARKS A group of environmentalists has sued the federal government in an effort to force a declaration on the source of air pollution over national parks and wilderness areas in the West. The lawsuit, filed recently, contends that emissions from two coal-fired power plants on the Navajo Nation and a third in Washington state have obscured views at places like the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde and Mount Rainier. NRPA GIS MAPPING PROGRAM The National Recreation and Park Association - NRPA - is pleased to announce the release of PRORAGIS, a new, easy-to-use, searchable online database and web-based GIS mapping program of public park and recreation department operations and facilities in the U.S. With PRORAGIS, agencies can acquire valuable information in order to benchmark themselves with others, create and justify budgets and strategic plans, and enhance their overall operations.
