Visit a Park with Your Legislator Day Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation's official Park and Recreation month. Each year during July and August, federal legislators return to their home states to reconnect with citizens and reassess their priorities. As part of Park and Recreation Month 2010, NRPA (and WRPA) are encouraging our park and recreation agencies to participate in Visit a Park with Your Legislator Day during the Congress July break (5th through the 9th). Invite your U.S. Congressmen and Senators to a park or recreation facility. Show them firsthand your parks, facilities, and programs in action and the impact they have on their constituents.
A variety of materials are available to help you plan and implement your legislator visit/event, including a "How To" Guide, a sample invitation letter, the 2010 NRPA Legislative Platform, and the Park and Recreation Month Proclamation. These materials are available for download in the 2010 Park and Recreation Month Tool Kit. Let's show our legislators just how critical parks and recreation are to communities and the country! |

EPA RELEASES DRAFT GENERAL PERMIT FOR PESTICIDE APPLICATIONS EPA recently released a draft general permit that would, for the first time, bring pesticide applicators within the Clean Water Act's (CWA) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting program.[1] EPA's draft general permit stems from a 2009 federal court decision that invalidated EPA's long-standing exemption, embodied in a 2006 EPA rule, from the NPDES program for pesticide applicators. That decision will require approximately 365,000 pesticide applicators nationwide, such as agriculture, forestland owners, land managers, and other public entities, to obtain NPDES permits by April 2011.
