Greetings!
Even though the Zen Community has been closed for
the month of August, we've had an enormous amount
of activity and events take place during this month.
People came and made offerings and worked on the
hula mound and then June's hula students gave a
hula performance. We had a spontaneous celebration
when we were close to finishing the hula mound, in
which two of June's hula students danced on the
mound, and Jesus Soberon performed a butoh dance.
Jesus's butoh dance was a beautiful performance, in
which he emerged from mud in the pond and
proceeded to dance on the hula mound and then
returned to the mud. It reminded me of a passage in
the Lotus sutra where the Bodhisattvas emerge from
the earth. It is a wonderful teaching about the inherent
enlightened nature of our world and the
sacredness of space and time.
We started this garden with the intention of creating a
sacred space for our temple grounds. So "What is the
sacred?" is a live question for us.
In his book, "Figuring the Sacred", Paul Ricoeur lists
five aspects of the sacred. First is the sense of the
sacred as irrational and overwhelming. Second is a
heightened aesthetic intensity in both space and time.
Third is the "nonlinguisticality" of the sacred. Fourth is
the role of nature and natural elements. Fifth is the
logic of the correspondences in all the previous
manifestations.
Jesus will live with us for the month of September before
returning to his home in Spain. He will work full-time in
the garden during this time, and I hope many of you will
have the opportunity to meet him and to experience the
primal beauty of butoh dancing. He will also offer a half-
day workshop on butoh dancing on Sunday, Sept. 28th.
There are so many people still to thank for their
generosity in supporting this garden. Rich and Susan
Eyre donated over $700 worth of conifer plants from
their Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery. We recently
received an anonymous donation of $5,000. Many of
you
have given generously to help support this project
in terms of dollars while others have spent energy
working in the garden itself. Perhaps that too is how
the sacred manifests, when we work together with
common purpose to bring forth a warm and authentic
sangha community.
I'm deeply grateful to all of you and the faith you have
shown in the Buddha-Dharma. I know times are
difficult for many people right now. But if we trust that
our world is sacred and that we and everyone else is
basically sane and awake, we can overcome all kinds
of difficulties and obstacles. Conducting ourselves
with simple human dignity and integrity, we contribute
to the well being of those around us.
May all beings be safe, happy and free from fear.
In gassho, with much respect
Joshin Althouse

Integrative Restoration is an ancient transformative
meditative practice that is derived from the ancient
teachings of Yoga Nidra. It leads to psychological,

the splits present in the body, mind and senses. It is
restorative in that it helps practitioners recognize their
underlying nondual ground of being that they share
with all beings.

| Butoh Dance Workshop, Sunday, Sept 28, 1-5 pm |
 |
|
Butoh dance developed in Japan after WWII. It typically
involves playful and grotesque imagery, often performed
in white-body paint, but there is no set style. Artistically,
butoh is willing to subvert conventional notions of dance.
Jesus Soberon was born in Bilbao, Spain. His dancing
began in 1986. He has studied jazz, contemporary
dance, contact-improvisation, mime and butoh dance.
He has danced with companies such as Marie Ocard,
Chiqui Show, El Duende del Globo, Ses Tres Claus
and Yumiko Yoshioka's Ten-pen-chii. He has shown
his work in different theaters, art spaces and festivals
in Germany and Spain.
He recently performed a butoh
dance on our hula mound at the Empty Sound
Temple. It was a wonderful initiation for our sacred
garden. This incredible performance was filmed by Vicki
Ingle, so if you would like to see it, please contact her.
She has put the film on a DVD.
We are fortunate to have Jesus living at our temple for
the month of September. He has offered to teach a half-
day workshop on butoh dance at the Empty Sound
Temple.
Cost: $60/ZCOP members $40.

Tara Dance Circle, Sunday, Sept. 14th, 1-3 pm |
|
|
|
The 21 Praises of Tara is an ancient prayer that
celebrates 21 aspects of Tara (Kwan Yin, Kannon), the
Tibetan Buddhist emanation of divine compassion in
feminine form. Through the medium of sacred dance
this prayer becomes a meditation in movement,
gracefully blending mantra and mudra. The
movements are simple and one does not need to be
a trained dancer to master them, nor does one need to
be a Buddhist to participate. Its practice teaches
mindfulness in motion and can also be a joyful and
healthy addition to a daily devotional routine.
This will be the first Tara Dance circle in Illinois. The
circle is open to practitioners from all the various
wisdom traditions who are drawn to practice the
Praises of Tara and their chosen
tradition and its creative expression through the
sacred arts.
Tara Dance is the core practice of Tara Dhatu,
www.taradhatu.org, an international nonprofit
organization dedicated to empowering and uplifting
humanity through the sacred arts. The organization
was formed by Prema Desara, the dancer's master, at
the request of her teacher, His Eminence Tai Situ
Rinpoche, to protect the dance's integrity as a Vehicle
for Liberation.
