Greetings!
On Oct. 13, 2007, my teacher, Roshi Nicolee Jikyo
McMahon installed me as Abbot of our Empty Sound
Temple. It was a joyous occasion and a big event for our
sangha community.
Kaililani's hula students provided icing on the cake by
sharing their beautiful and graceful Hawaiian hula
dances during lunch. I am grateful for the warmth, joy
and aloha that they bring to all of us.
I want to thank all of you who made this possible. Many
of you have given generously of your time and your
funding to make this temple possible. I want to
especially
thank our sangha members who worked tirelessly for
months on all the details that came together for this
auspicious event.
Now comes the work of growing the temple. Over the
next three years, we plan to completely re-landscape
the temple grounds as a contemplative Japanese
garden. I want to especially thank Martin Hakubai
Mosko who's generosity and skill continue to guide us in
planning and developing this garden.
Whenever you come here, for zazen, a Sunday or
Saturday program, for hula, or any other event, I invite
you to bring some canned food from your kitchen pantry
and place it on our altar. Once we have enough food for
several boxes, we will deliver this to the Oak Park and
Austin food
pantries.
So let us proceed with joy and repose, celebrating our
abundance and our diversity as a vital, genuine
spiritual community.
With a full heart, Joshin Sensei

Liz Allen caught this moment following the Ascending
the Mountain Ceremony. From left to right, Peter
Cunningham, Robert Althouse, Bernie Glassman and
Paul Levy.
Lone mountain with no name is not found on any map.
The blind see a panoramic vista, the deaf hear a
symphony
and the stone woman dances hula in the temple
where buddhas and beggars mix freely.
poem Joshin Sensei read in Buddha Hall on day of the
ceremony.
We especially thank Joshin's teacher, Roshi Nicolee
Jikyo McMahon for her care, support and guidance over
many years of training and practice. Roshi
installed Joshin Sensei as Abbot of the Empty Sound
Temple on October 13, 2007.
We also wish to express our appreciation to another
teacher of Joshin's, Roshi Bernie Glassman, for joining
the Mountain Seat Ceremony in support of our temple.
The excellent photographs are the work of Peter
Cunningham. Randy Baird also took some wonderful
photos which are included with Peter's on our web stie.
If you wish to appreciate Peter's work, you can find it at
