This lovely community is ideally located between the international airport (8 miles to the west) and downtown Cincinnati (7 miles to the north). The 2010 census pegs the population at 8,207, with 2,033 families. (See Map) M Space The original fort in Fort Mitchell is said to be on a plot of land between Barrington Road and the end of Summit Lane. This was one of 23 forts in the hills of Northern Kentucky that were built to protect the city of Cincinnati from marauding Confederate armies. It was named after General Ormsby M. Mitchel, successful officer in the Civil War, professor of math and philosophy at Cincinnati College (UC) and founder of the Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel Institute of Science & Language. (Ormsby Mitchel's complete bio here) M Space We’ve heard it said that homes come onto the market less frequently compared to other communities because residents tend to hand down their homes to family members. Our own Kate Boschert is a resident and says there’s a bit of truth to that, but Kate contends that there are plenty of buying opportunities in this community. Kate also noted that in 2009 and 2010, there were 7 homes built costing between $352,500 and $492,700. One might conclude that Fort Mitchell's desirability is increasing! M Space School System The Beechwood School System includes a high school and elementary school. Both are highly rated. Beechwood High seems to produce an extraordinarily high number of National Merit Scholarships for a school with fewer than 100 students per graduating class. Despite the small size, the Beechmont Tigers have been state football champions 11 times in the past 30 years. The marching band has been a Class A State of Kentucky Champion 4 times in 25 years. Blessed Sacrament is the Catholic school. M Space Notable Landmarks Highland Cemetery, 250 acres of serenity walking trails and lakes that are popular for fishing. In many ways, it’s not unlike the beautiful Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. M Space The Drawbridge Inn Convention Center is well known throughout the region, but perhaps not everyone knows that new owners have updated the facility with a complete renovation. There’s also the Greyhound Tavern which is frequented by a cadre of local residents. It began it's history in 1921 as the Dixie Tea Room. M Space Speaking of ‘Dixie’, the Dixie Highway, which slices right through For Mitchell, has a history all it’s own. It is said to have begun as a buffalo trail that was paved in the 20’s. It was originally known as the Lexington Covington Turnpike. Prior to the construction of 71/75, it was the main route south. Here's the Wikipedia article. M Space Nearby golf courses include the 9 hole Fort Mitchell Country Club, Devou, Twin Oaks. Tennis enthusiasts enjoy 3 courts at Ormsby Park, 3 at Beechwood High, or 16 courts at Five Seasons Sports Club in nearby Crescent Hills. M Space NOTE: Adjacent to Fort Mitchell is the smaller community of Lakeside Park. Just south of Fort Mitchell, this community is often overlooked in web searches. We always take care to introduce this neighborhood to our Northern Kentucky home buyers.MM -RSIR |
