Wbug The first non-native settler of what is now Milford was John Hageman. He laid out the town and named it Hageman’s Mills. This original layout featured Water, High & Main streets running alongside the river and four intersecting streets: Mill, Cross, Elm, & Locust (Cross was later named for President Garfield). An additional street called simply County Road ran right to the river at a spot which served as a safe place to ford the river.
Wbug It was the ford across the Little Miami River that made the town a popular crossroads. Growth was propelled further in 1803 when Hageman constructed a mill. Other citizens followed with their own mills.
Wbug By 1815, John Hageman had departed for Indiana and the remaining residents began referring to their town as Milford. This clever name referenced the two features the townspeople most appriciated, the safe river crossing and the mills. Milford was touched by the Civil War when Morgan’s Raiders torched a bridge in 1863.

Milford is one of the more historic communities surrounding Cincinnati. This is a community that honors it's history. The downtown and surrounding streets present pre-WW1 structures. One of these is the Promont House shown at left. It's a wonderful 1865 Victorian that was home to the 43rd Governor of Ohio, John M. Pattison.

Wbug Today, Milford is popular for the quaint central business district- an eclectic collection of intrigueing shops housed in historic storefronts. One of these is the noted Bishops Bicycles - the oldest bicycle store in this area, having been founded in 1890. Wbug
Wbug A Dream City For Outdoor Enthusiasts
This brings to mind why many people know Milford- the bike trails. Milford sits adjacent to the Little Miami Bike Trail the longest paved trail in the US, running through five counties. Well over 300,000 people a year use the trail for biking and hiking. The Little Miami Bike Trail has been linking to other trails, such as the Loveland Ohio Bike Trail.
Wbug A newer stretch of path connects Milford and Terrace Park to the Little Miami Golf Center which is adjacent to Bass Island Park which has river access for kayakers and canoeists. The bike trail is still growing! It will soon link up with Lunken Airport. Ultimately, the trail will wind it's way all the way to downtown Cincinnati.
Wbug Milford has many parks. These include; 6 acre Carriage Way, 9+ acre Garfield, and 27 acre Jim Terrell Park. (Jim Terrell park has river access for kayakers & canoeists, which is appropriate since Jim Terrell is a 4 time Olympian canoeist. Interestingly, Jim Terrell won his first canoe race with our broker, Lee Robinson.) These parks are part of the Milford Urban Trail System. In turn, the Milford trails are at the intersection of eight paths totalling over 22,000 miles. Milford is truly an outdoor enthusiast's dream city. Wbug -RSIR
