Wbug The Village of Mariemont is yet another community with connections to the peripatetic adventurer, Benjamin Stites. Quoting from the Mariemont Preservation Foundation, “It was December of 1788 when the first group of people since the prehistoric Indians settled in our area. They chose a parcel of land now occupied by Lunken airport and in honor of Christopher Columbus, they named it Columbia. Just a few weeks after their arrival, they celebrated Christmas with a communal dinner. Imagine their surprise when they were visited by a Shawnee hunting party, who stayed to share the meal!”
Wbug Original families included; Stites, Ferris, Peck, Knapp, and Lockwood clans. Eliphalet Ferris’s home, begun in 1802, would become the center point in Mariemont’s eventual layout. And this is where we fast forward 100 years to tell the story of how Mariemont came to become such an award-winning community.

Mariemont landmarks: Community Church - Dale Park Sculpture - Bell Tower, (located in Dogwood Park).

Wbug Ms. Emery entrusted her vision to John Nolen, a noted town planner & Charles Livingood, her assistant. Livingood studied parcels of land in Pleasant Ridge, Kennedy Heights and Price Hill before settling on acreage that what would become Mariemont.
Wbug Mary Emery and associates divied up streets among architectural firms. For instance:
- Oak & Chestnut Streets feature English Half Timber Jacobean architecture.
- Sheldon Close features English Half Timber Elizabethan architecture.
- Murray Road exhibits Georgian Philadelphia row house style.
- Linden Place presents Colonial & Dutch gambrel roofed houses.
- Beech Street displays Colonial architecture.
Additional styles include Italianate for the Parish Center and English Norman for the beautiful community church.
Mariemont even has a wonderful Mid-Century Modern Home, which we are currently offering for sale! See it here!
Wbug The eclectic styles come together in a phenomenally cohesive community. The result has been so successful that the entire village has been designated a National Historic Landmark as well as being designated one of the ‘Top 10’ Great Neighborhoods in America by The American Planning Association! See urban plan.
Wbug Residents are deservedly proud of their school system which is highly ranked. GreatSchools rates it a 10 out of a 10. The elementary school is ranked 177th out of 1,688 Ohio public elementary schools. The city school district itself is ranked 32nd of 740 Ohio school districts. The High School has 13 AP courses and 20 varsity sports.
Wbug There are 50 acres of parkland within the Village. Dogwood Park is home to the lovely Mariemont Bell Tower housing a wonderful carillon. Residents gather about the park in the summer to be entertained by a carillon concert. Summertime also means fun at the pool complex adjacent to Dogwood Park. Popular gathering spots include: National Exemplar, dilly cafe, and of course, Mariemont Theatre.Wbug -RSIR
Wbug Addendum 1: Subsequent to designing Mariemont, John Nolen planned the city of Venice, Florida.
Wbug Addendum 2: The Village of Mariemont has a sister city in the UK, Hampstead Garden, a London suburb.
