Amberley Village is yet another Hamilton County community visited by the peripatetic Benjamin Stites. It was Stites who led a group of 26 settlers to this idyllic location of rolling hills and natural springs. One of these settlers was Edmund Buxton, who is said to be the first permanent resident, acquiring land along the old Indian trail that is now known as Ridge Road. In 1797, he began building a grand home from bricks made from clay dug from his land. This photo shows what the home looked like in 1953 - at nearly 150 years old. Sadly, it deteriorated rapidly after this photo was taken and was razed around 1961. Between the bookends of Buxton building his home and its razing, Amberley Village came to be one of the most desirable communities in the region. In 1927, Justin & Josephine Rollman moved from Avondale to a 200 acre farm that fronted the east side of Ridge Road. Known as Rollridge Farm, it was a thriving dairy for many years. Today, it is known as the Rollman Estates and contains many lovely homes. (Justine had an interesting family history. Her grandparents were the Archduke and Duchess of Austria and her father was a brother of Dr. Sigmund Freud.) Somewhat later, Herbert French, a Procter & Gamble executive, purchased 300 acres that he named Reachmont Farm. Mr. French later donated the land upon which the Village Hall on Ridge Road is located. In appreciation, he was given the honor of naming the community. Having traveled through the English countryside and recognizing similarities to the dignified rural atmosphere, he selected the name of a rural English town. Mr. French continued his philanthropy to the end when he willed his home and land to the City of Cincinnati for a park. French Park is the second-largest park after Mt Airy. Amberley Village Today: Like its English namesake, Amberley Village has a distinctive, rural feel. A planned community, homes were required to sit on parcels of at least 1 acre. Robinson Sotheby's has been privileged to have assisted the sale or purchase of many Amberley homes. To mention a few; 2930 Belkay Lane, 9074 Ridgeway & 2930 Fair Acres. In certain circles, the most prominent home in Amberley Village is the fabulous Frank Lloyd Wright designed home on Knoll Road. The photos above show 3 notable landmarks. At left is the recently re-dedicated Mayerson Jewish Community Center, a fantastic resource, offering education, fitness and recreation options for preschool, youth and adult. The center photo shows Village Hall on Ridge Road. If you've ever driven past, you no doubt have seen people on the ‘Walking Track’. There are actually two tracks. An upper track is 2,144 feet and the lower is 1,644 feet. There are also 4 tennis courts and a child’s playground. At right is French Hall. If you click on the photo, you can see a brief video showing the view of the grounds in front of the home Amberley Village is home to K K Bene Israel - Rockdale Temple, the oldest Jewish Congregation in Ohio and west of the Allegheny Mountains. This beautiful Temple is of contemporary architecture. Interestingly, 3 other community synagogues have a Mid-Century Modern design. Which makes sense when you consider that a good percentage of the homes are Mid-Century Modern. These Synagogues include: Kneseth Israel, Adath Israel, & Isaac M Wise Temple. Amberley Village is home to businesses such as EZ Pak Printing, Topicz, Saturday Knight, and Pepsi-Cola. For many, many years it was the home of Gibson Greeting Card Company, once the 3rd largest greeting card manufacturer. Amberley Village is on the verge of major change. The community is currently deciding the future of 133 acres left vacant by the sale of the Crest Hills Country Club. We're excited to see what vision this forward looking community decides for this huge parcel. -RSIR |
