Wbug The first recorded landowners in what is now Mt Washington were six veterans of the Revolution, each from Virginia, who were awarded land for their service. However, these men did not settle this hilltop. That distinction goes to Stephen Sutton, a farmer, & Rev. John Corbly, a Baptist minister, who purchased the parcels from the original owners.
Wbug Sutton prospered and in 1846 opened a store at the corner of Beechmont & Corbly. This was also the post office and Sutton was the first postmaster. Most agree it was Sutton who established the name of the community. His 3 year service in the American army during the Revolution must have given him a unique appreciation of General George Washington. Amazingly, Stephen Sutton’s boyhood home still stands at 1712 Longbourne Street.

Guardian Angels ChurchWbugWater Tower with Public Library in foregroundWbugThe Athenaeum of Ohio

Mt Washington has many prominent landmarks. These include: Guardian Angels Church, (above left), The Water Tower, (middle), and The Athenaeum of Ohio, (above right), which is located on the community's eastern edge and is one of the oldest Catholic Seminarys in the United States.
Wbug Present: 165 Years after Sutton's store opened, the intersection at Beechmont & Corbly remains the heart of this community. With long lived enterprises such as a locksmith, jewelry store, Kroger, Walgreens, Creamy Whip, several banks & a public library, residents don't have to travel far for services. Restaurants include the New York, New York Fresh Deli, Tumi Cafe (Peruvian), & Young's Kitchen (Chinese)
Wbug Local foodies were delighted when celebrated chef Jean-Robert de Cavel opened the Paradiso on Clough Pike in adjacent Anderson. Other Anderson restaurants popular with Mt Washington residents include Clough Crossing and Salem Gardens.
Wbug Residents are proud of the local schools. The highly popular, Sands Montessori (the nation's first public Montessori school) is in a brand new LEED-certified building. Mt Washington Elementary students are currently attending classes at the Hyde Park Elementary on Edwards Road in Hyde Park while their lovely school is being remodelded. This should be completed by 2012. Of course, the Catholic, co-ed McNicholas High School is a highly visible landmark.
Wbug Parks: Stanbery Park is quite popular with residents. It is 125 acres offering wonderful hiking, play & picnic areas. It is often used for community gatherings and ... pumpkin chucking! Seriously. Swing by Stanbery Park on Saturday, November 5th from noon to 5 pm and you can see just how far a trebuchet can hurl a pumpkin.
Wbug In addition, California Woods is over 110 acres of forest with some naturalized prairie/meadow. This is one of the most amazing preserves in the region, popular with hikers, bird watchers and anyone who appreciates nature. The Lick Run Creek runs right through the park, making the ecosystem complete.
Wbug Magrish Riverlands Preserve, provides Little Miami River access for kayakers & fishermen. Residents enjoy nearby Lunken Playfield and the network of biking trails associated with the Little Miami Scenic Trail. Indoor exercise is available through the Mt Washington Rec Center, which draws active minded people from miles around.
Wbug Demographics: This is a community of solid homes with a 2010 median value of $103,700. Architect-built homes from the 20's are found on streets such as Wilaray Terrace, Honeysuckle Drive & Lane. Ambar Avenue features many builder designed homes. Newer homes can be found on Adena Trail and Elstun Road. More expansive homes can be found in the 'Lower Salem' area near Wayside and Apple Hill Road.Wbug -RSIR
