It may surpise you to know that Mid-Century Modern is an architectural movement that has inspired many advocates. Admirers of this design aesthetic even develop websites to promote its virtues. Perhaps a quote from one of them; midcenturymodernist.com, explains the enthusiasm: “This era of Modernism hit the design sweet spot. Finding harmony between the natural and the man made, designers made objects that serve their purpose with organic grace.” We agree that Mid-Century Modern is a wonderful synthesis of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Modernist movement developing in Europe. It was the perfect style of home for a burgeoning middle class. It captured the romance of the Prairie style with the excitement of Modernism. California architects embraced this design with full abandon. Whole tracts of Mid-Century Modern homes sprang up in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The style became so popular that it is sometimes referred to as California Modern. One would expect that Chicago, the American city most associated with influencing architecture, would have an extensive selection of Mid-Century Modern homes. They do. Perhaps the most iconic, yet least practical example is the Farnsworth Home, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Another Chicago home was imortalized in the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” - most dramatically in the famous Ferrari in the garage scene. Cincinnati had its share of architects who embraced this movement and created some wonderful living spaces. For instance, Ben and Abe Dombar were direct apprentices to Frank Lloyd Wright and designed a large portfolio of work in this area. Other prominent names you will discover as you encounter these homes are; Carl Strauss, Rudy Hermes, Ray Roush, Dick Lakeman and Twedell & Wheeler. (Our agents Tim & Carrie Hinde's current home is a Mid Century Modern designed by Twedell & Wheeler.) As this style was popular between the early 1950’s through the late 1960’s, these homes are found in areas that were developed in that time period. Finneytown, Wyoming, College Hill, Amberley Village and Clifton (near Lafayette Avenue) have some excellent examples. As it happens, we are offering for sale, the only Mid-Century Modern built in Mariemont! In addition to our Mariemont Mid Century Modern for sale, we have just begun marketing another in Finneytown. Click anywhere on the photo to see which of these Cincinnati homes is now for sale. Post and Beam Construction Mid-Century Modern benefitted from the emerging home building method of post and beam construction. The basic building model includes placing solid vertical beams as supports, with solid cross beams over the top. The result is a free-standing frame, incredibly strong, with an open and spacious floor plan. Quite often, beams are left exposed in the interior of the home, creating a unique appearance. This enabled architects to create those walls of windows that are such a dramatic feature of these homes. -RSIR |
