Clifton is an historic, diverse community with some of Cincinnati’s most remarkable and interesting architecture. This was the first community whose streets were illuminated by gaslights in 1843. In the late 1800's, Lafayette Avenue was the street where you could find stunning homes. NOTE: we have a listing just off Lafayette on Windings Lane. It's a condo in the former Neff Castle. The Chapel addition was designed by Samuel Hannaford, Cincinnati's early premier architect. Click here to view this remarkable Clifton residence. Higher denisity housing is located nearer to the business district on Ludlow Avenue. The Ludlow location is home to an eclectic collection of unique shops and restaurants that attract local residents and visitors from around the city. The diversity of the neighborhood is reflected in the variety of restaurants such as: Cactus Pear & Habenaro (Mexican), Ambar, Amol, Dusmesh, Apna (Indian), Biagio’s Bistro, (Italian), La Poste, (French), Corinthian, (Greek), Thai Cafe, China Kitchen, Olives Ludlow Garage Bar & Grill, (American), Dewey’s Pizza, Skyline, Graeter’s, and Sitwell's, a unique coffee house. Interesting boutiques include: D-Raphael Jewelry, Toko Baru, Pangaea, Spiral Light, Tawana, and Saki. Many local residents consider The Esquire Theatre, built in 1911, the most treasured landmark. Sadly, IGE, the neighborhood grocery closed in early 2001. Additional entertainment and culture can be discovered at the nearby College-Conservatory of Music. Recognized internationally as one of the finest in the nation, yet its not very well known that student theatre and music performances are available to the public. These are infused with all the joy and enthusiasm of young, talented adults who are on the cusp of a professional career. You can see a calendar here. A high percentage of rental housing in the southern section caters to students at nearby educational institutions: University of Cincinnati, Hebrew Union College (keeper of the Dead Sea Scrolls), Cincinnati State, the UC College of Medicine --and hospitals such as: University Hospital, (ranked among Best Hospitals 2009 - 2010), Children’s Hosptial, Good Samaritan Hospital, the VA Hospital, and Deaconness Hospital (now offering only urgent care and radiology). You’re never very far from greenspace when you live in Clifton. Mt. Storm park in particular is a visually stunning park, offering grand vistas of the Mill Creek Valley and the distant hillsides on to the west. The park was once the estate of Robert Bowler. This remarkable estate was razed in 1917 leaving only the Temple of Love gazebo from the original estate. One of the more exciting developments in Clifton in recent years is the opening of the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. The center offers classes in one of the most beautiful Beaux-Arts style Clifton School. The creation of the CCAC has also meant that the community was able to preserve the Carriage House portion of the historic Alexander McDonald estate. McDonald was a Scottish native and early supporter of the arts scene in Cincinnati. The vision of the CCAC is to provide a civic hub for the community. By all accounts, they are succeeding. We believe Clifton is an integral part of Cincinnati’s growth and is well positioned to shine ever brighter in the coming years! -RSIR |
