![]() Later in his career, Burnham began incorporating Roman Empire elements such as the dramatic columns of the Art Museum or 18 East Fourth Street. Perhaps this is the inspiration for the quote attributed to Burnham; “The past is truly prologue”. This 'look-back' caused a rift in Burnham's relationship with Louis Sullivan, who was moving to an ornamentation-free, modern style. We find this later Burnham style, as seen in his East Fourth structure, as having a distinctive attraction - stately yet visually poetic. --- At the time of his death in 1912, The D. H. Burnham & Company was the largest architectural company in the world. |
