Neighborhood Sales Activity Report - Robinson Sotheby's International Realty

We know Cincinnati is a treasure trove of remarkable architecture. Did you know the city is home to many 'skyscrapers' of the ‘Chicago School’? For reference; a Chicago School skyscraper is a conceptual Greek or Roman column. The first floor functions as the base. The middle stories act as the shaft of the column (usually with little ornamental detail). The top floor or so represents the capital, with more ornamental detail and capped with a cornice. It's a lovely style and we have more examples than many cities.

One reason we have so many such buildings is Daniel H. Burnham, a contemporary of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Burnham established friendships here that led to his designing a good number of buildings. Examples include: Union Savings Bank & Trust Co. (Fourth & Walnut, NW corner), Traction Building (Fifth & Walnut, SE corner), First National Bank Building (Fourth & Walnut, SE corner), and a building in which we have a Penthouse Residence for sale, the Fourth National Bank Building at 18 East Fourth.

Burnham also built the Schmidlapp Memorial Library (which is now the entrance to the Cincinnati Art Museum), added a major section to the Shillito Building, the east wing addition of the Alms & Doepke Building, and most likely designed the “Maxwelton Mansion” at 2220 Victory Parkway. This home is now the Guest Residences for the Edgecliff Condominiums. Interestingly, a quote from ‘The Railroad Gazette’ reported that Burnham had created plans for a ‘Union Station’ - to be located at Third & Walnut streets, and that these plans were ‘under consideration’.

Later in his career, Burnham began incorporating Roman Empire elements such as the dramatic columns of the Art Museum or 18 East Fourth Street. Perhaps this is the inspiration for the quote attributed to Burnham; “The past is truly prologue”. This 'look-back' caused a rift in Burnham's relationship with Louis Sullivan, who was moving to an ornamentation-free, modern style. We find this later Burnham style, as seen in his East Fourth structure, as having a distinctive attraction - stately yet visually poetic. --- At the time of his death in 1912, The D. H. Burnham & Company was the largest architectural company in the world.
