We are introducing a wonderful home for sale that offers an opportunity to discuss Georgian architecture. Located at 2570 Erie Avenue, this home is very near a 'High Style' Georgian. High Style is a term used to identify a home that adheres to all characteristics of a defined architectural style. The vast majority of homes are not absolutely true to a specific architectural category. Most are interpretations by the builder who has adapted high-style features to his own preference or purpose. Even today, you can see builders adapting aspects of classic architectural styles to new construction. The builder of this home was Myers Y. Cooper, who went on to become Governor of Ohio.
Interestingly, Georgian was the dominant style in the American colonies between 1720 and 1800. Unfortunately, since these homes were constructed in the oldest parts of cities such as Boston, Philadelphia and New York, they were lost to urbanization. A larger selection of Georgians can be found in cities such as Portsmouth, NH, Newport, RI, & Charleston, SC. In the Cincinnati area, this architectural style is somewhat rare, given the time period when the near downtown neighborhoods were developed.
Features that identify our listing as Georgian include; the paired chimneys, (one on either side of the home), the front door positioned at the center of the home, a dentil embellished cornice, and lovely pedimented dormers. These dormers are enhanced with interestingly carved reliefs within the triangular area, known as the tympanum.

One consistent feature of true Georgian homes is the arrangement of 5 windows across the second floor facade. In addition, all windows had 6 panes per sash. As you can see, our Erie Avenue home has just 3 windows accross the facade of the second floor. Interestingly, the 3 window arrangement is a feature of Georgian Revival. This reflects the reality that when this home was constructed in 1906, Georgian Revivial had arrived on the scene.
One feature definitely not found in 'High Style' Georgian is the spacious front porch which even includes an open veranda. This addition adds a welcoming note that, in our opinion, is lacking in true Georgians. The truly impressive twin columns with their remarkable Ionic caps are also more Georgian Revival.
Georgian homes reflected the Renaissance ideals made popular by the famous architect, Christopher Wren. These homes always convey quiet tranquility, refinement and distinction. This makes sense when you remember that the style is named in honor of the many British kings named George. -RSIR
