Update on Ye Yu

by Jodi Allion, LWB's Director - Heart and General Surgery

Ye Yu, a child from an impoverished family, faced difficulties that most of us can only imagine. He was born with a heart defect and had open heart surgery a little over a year ago. But recently he began having great pain in his chest, only to discover he had a serious infection of the heart muscle and also needed valve replacement. His family had depleted their savings caring for a grandfather, who passed away from lung cancer last year. Ye Yu's father sold his truck, which was the source of his livelihood, in order to help meet Ye Yu's medical expenses. Supporters of our Unity Fund from around the world rallied around this family to meet additional hospitalization and surgery expenses. So many heartfelt notes were sent with the donations that they were all compiled and sent to the father to read while he attended to his son in the hospital.

Ye Yu's surgery went well, but the medication for his heart infection caused other complications. He required dialysis for a period of time to improve his kidney function but has since rallied and been moved to a regular ward. Ye Yu is now off the respirator, and his heart and lungs are functioning normally. While his condition is still serious, the improvement seen over the last few days is very encouraging. Here is what our China manager and Ye Yu's father said after receiving and reading the notes from Ye Yu's sponsors:

I gave the messages from the donors to Ye Yu's father. He read every blessing and sentence carefully; he was deeply moved. He said, "My appreciation is more than words can say! Though I never knew you at all, I can feel everyone's concern for my son. We felt so helpless for our son's treatment. We felt we would have to give up, but couldn't bear to think of it. The cost to save our son was beyond our reach, and we were unable to borrow any more. My wife cried every day. The fund from LWB foundation came just in time. It was life-saving for my boy. Every time I see my son, I tell him about these things. My son is a sensible child. I know he will remember."

We sincerely thank all of our supporters for their donations, prayers, and concern for this young boy. It has been a humbling opportunity to work together with you to provide the gifts of hope and healing for Ye Yu and his family.

Baby Wade

Baby Wade came into LWB's hands at the end of July with severe intestinal necrosis, following surgery at a local hospital in Henan province. He weighed just 2 kg, and he couldn't make any noise when he cried because he was so weak. Wade was immediately admitted to the ICU to receive IV fluids and antibiotics. We were so thankful that he began to show improvement after just a few days, and doctors came up with a complete treatment plan for his healing. Precious Wade is now able to drink formula and has increased his intake slowly. Although he remains in the ICU, Wade is showing improvement each day. Approximately $4,500 is still needed for Baby Wade's hospitalization and medical care. Your donation in any amount will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for believing in little Wade and for giving him this second chance.

Million Dollar Round Table Foundation

LWB sincerely thanks the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation for their generous grant of $25,000, benefiting our Believe in Me schools in a huge way. From the recent teacher training held this summer to support of our schools throughout this new school year, this grant will have a life-changing impact on the teachers and students at these schools.
