Hope and Healing for Orphaned Children

LWB's Medical Program

 Volume 8, Issue 3March 2012

March's newsletter features LWB's Medical Program. LWB's Medical Program has provided surgeries and other medical care for thousands of orphaned and impoverished children from provinces throughout China. Our medical program's goal is to provide the highest quality care for the children entrusted to us. Our decisions are based, first and foremost, on what is in the best interest of the child, as well as balancing the constraints of location, ability, finances and long-term care options available. Click the link below to download the complete newsletter in convenient .pdf format. You'll find the stories in this email plus these features and stories:

  • The Sky's the Limit (Feature article by LWB's Medical Director, Nancy Delpha)
  • 9th Annual "Born in My Heart" Art Auction (Happening live on eBay, April 12-17)
  • Kudos (stories from our special donors, incl. Sevenly.org, Asher Foundation and more)

LWB's 9th Annual "Born in My Heart" Art Auction

It's that time again - the Love Without Boundaries 9th Annual "Born in My Heart" Art Auction will be live on eBay April 12-17, 2012! This year's auction should be one of the best. Already there are some great items to bid on; however, we need more! "We appreciate all of our donors and welcome donations as usual," says Debbie Gentile, Art Auction Coordinator.

Since the annual fundraiser started in 2003, more than 80 children have been helped through the proceeds. The auction was originally intended to raise funds for children who needed heart surgery; now proceeds are used to help children with any type of medical need.

As you can see, this fundraiser makes a HUGE difference. These children's lives would be very different if they had not had the medical care provided by these funds. Here's where you can help. You can shop. You can contribute items. You can do both!

Some of the items you can bid on this year include vacations (one in St. Lucia!); beautiful artwork, including an illustration by Caroline Young (shown above) and a painting by Kathy Bond; a beautiful 100 Good Wishes quilt; and much more!

"Your donation to our auction is truly a gift that forever alters lives. Please consider being a part of a child's wondrous story of healing," Debbie adds. If you have a fine art or handcrafted item you would like to donate, please email auction@lwbmail.com. The deadline for donations is April 1st.

The Sky's the Limit!

by Nancy Delpha, Medical Director

Late last year I was asked to take over as LWB's Medical Director, replacing our dedicated and hard-working previous director, Kate Finco. While intimidated by the size of the job, I made the decision to take on the position, knowing that it would be tough to fill her shoes. While I cannot say it has been easy, I can say I'm increasingly grateful for the amazing and loyal donors, volunteers, and friends we have that support the Medical Program in so many tangible and intangible ways. I continue to learn firsthand that when we share a passion to serve orphaned and impoverished children half a world a way, there is no limit to what can be done when we join forces, despite our individual limitations!

I was blessed to be asked to speak to a group of sixth grade girls in my hometown of Edmond, Oklahoma, about LWB's upcoming cleft exchange. These girls are part of a faith based group that meets regularly, and, as part of their desire to participate in service opportunities, they wanted to know how they could help with our upcoming Cleft Exchange in Kaifeng, Henan, next month. The girls chose to make bibs for the children who will be attending the exchange, and they were abuzz with excitement as they cut and ironed fabric, sewed the pieces together, and created the cutest bibs ever! Click here to read more about the Cleft Exchange, which will take place from April 15th to 20th at Kaifeng Children's Hospital and look forward with us to the upcoming photos of the kids with their new smiles, while wearing these darling bibs that a group of girls on the other side of the world made for them because they care.

Our annual Born in My Heart Art Auction will be taking place around the same time from April 12th to 17th. Information on donating items and some of the items that will be available in the auction can be found in the sidebar article on the left. Proceeds from the auction will be used for children in need of urgent medical care, and children's lives will be changed because of the generosity of all donors and shoppers who participate!

Lastly, our Unity Fund program has grown exponentially over the last six months. We are being contacted weekly regarding impoverished families asking for assistance to provide needed medical care for their children. Click here to read more about this program and some of the children who are benefiting from the funds and learn of a unique opportunity to contribute to this fund.

While I still have so much to learn about this new role I am in, I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside an amazing team of volunteers, generous and loyal donors, and friends who desire to support LWB in ways that I could not have imagined in order to bring hope and healing to vulnerable children in China. I look forward to all that we can accomplish together, for the children!

Unity Fund

LWB's Unity Fund provides funding for medical care for children whose parents could not otherwise afford the procedures. These children are given a second chance at a healthy life in the arms of their families, meaning one more healthy child and one less orphan.

As more families hear about our fund, more and more are seeking assistance to help their children. More children mean a bigger need for funding.

LWB is offering a Unity Pin to anyone who donates $10 or more to our Unity Fund (while supplies last). This one-inch oval pin, made of gold plated alloy, has the Chinese character for Unity on the front set against a sand-blasted background. This pin represents not only the Unity of keeping families together, but also all of us United to help keep them together. Thank you for your generous support!

Cleft Exchange

Love Without Boundaries is excited to announce the upcoming Cleft Exchange in Kaifeng, Henan, from April 15th to 20th. Two surgeons and two anesthesiologists, along with a volunteer team, will partner with staff at Kaifeng Children's Hospital to perform cleft lip and palate repairs for approximately 40 to 50 children. Children like Yancy and Michael will receive lip repairs that provide for more successful feeding and weight gain. Georgia and Katherine will receive palate repairs, which will allow for proper speech development and improved self-esteem. Child sponsorships are $550 per child and will be available on the website over the next few weeks as we identify the children who will be attending. Full sponsorships or partial sponsorships in any amount are greatly appreciated. In addition to orphaned children, rural children living in poverty whose families cannot afford the surgery will be treated.

Click here to read more about the children available for sponsorship.

LWB's last cleft exchange trip took place in October, 2010, in Fuzhou, Fujian. Of the 22 orphaned children who had surgeries during that trip, 16 have now been adopted into their forever families or matched with a family. Absolutely no price can be put on the gift of family, which directly results from the opportunities given at these cleft exchanges. All of us are excited to see the new smiles and changed lives that will come out of this exchange. Thank you for your generous support!
