Hope for Herschel's Heart Necklace

One of our sponsors has designed a wonderful necklace to sell and she calls it "Hope for Herschel's Heart." 100% of the sales will be donated towards Herschel's heart surgery. The necklace designer has also teamed up with LWB's "Team His Strength" that is running in the upcoming LA Marathon to help finish funding Herschel's surgery. Stop by her Etsy store and take a look at her work. I bought mine already!

Looking Back to Look Ahead

by Amy Eldridge, Executive Director

"Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards."
-Soren Kierkegaard

The winter season is always a reflective one for me, as we compile all of the data on the children we have helped and the orphanages we have assisted throughout the year. Each year, as I look through the programs and see all of the good that our volunteers have accomplished, I am humbled. Nine years ago, when I walked into my first orphanage, I did so hoping that the crayons and stickers and Kix cereal I had in my bags would provide some degree of sunshine to the kids there. I harbored no dreams that I could do any more than that. In my head I was "just a mom" - and China was this enormous mystery that I wanted to learn as much as possible about. Who could have foreseen then what was in store, not only for me, but for the hundreds of volunteers who have joined the LWB family and the thousands of children we have now been able to impact together. I hope that you will take a few minutes of your time today to download our 2011 Annual Report because I believe it is absolute proof that people with a pure love of helping children can accomplish the most incredible things when we work together.

I feel it is important as a charity to look back on the past - to ask the hard questions of what worked well and what needs to be changed; to celebrate the children who found families; and of course to remember the ones who left this world far too soon. This past year saw more growth for LWB as our programs expanded into rural Guizhou and Shanxi Provinces. We were also faced daily with the growing challenges for Chinese orphanages as more and more babies enter institutional care with often critical medical needs.

As we move forward with helping children in 2012, we look forward to continuing our work to bring healing to vulnerable children. I will be heading back to China in early March to meet with officials there about possible new foster care and medical projects, and I know on that trip I will once again be giving thanks for each of you. Thank you for believing that when we see a real need, we must take real action. All of the data in our Annual Report concerning children and orphanages helped are only there because of YOU, and we never take that for granted.

Lenten Campaign: Formula for Healing Homes

For those who observe the season of Lent and would like to help with a great cause, LWB's Healing Homes program is raising funds for formula in our four homes.

A few months ago we learned that our favorite infant formula had been discontinued. Fortunately we were able to order another excellent formula right away; however, the cost is a whopping 57 percent higher than what we had been paying previously. We are asking our friends to collect their spare change saved from skipping coffee, ice cream, or whatever you choose as part of your Lenten tradition and to make a donation for formula for our healing homes. High quality formula is so very important to the growth and development of the children in our homes. You can read about our Lenten Campaign at our website and print out a label to affix to a jar or can for coin collection. Thank you for helping orphaned children during your season of Lent!
