Helping Orphaned Children With Serious Medical Issues
LWB's Healing Homes Program
|
|
| Volume 8, Issue 1 | January 2012 |
|
January's newsletter features LWB's Healing Homes Program. This program helps orphaned children with serious medical issues needing specialized care. These children are extremely vulnerable, due to being born with medical needs that often cannot be met in an institutional setting. LWB's healing homes are staffed with specially trained nannies who devote their time to the careful nurturing of these children. Click the link below to download the complete newsletter in convenient .pdf format. You'll find the stories in this email plus these features and stories:
- A New Year and New Beginnings for LWB's Healing Homes
- Got Formula? (PreNan for Premature Infants)
- Chinese New Year Red Envelope Campaign (Older Children Nutrition Program)
- Kudos (stories from our special donors, including Keely's sponsors: Girl Scout Troop 3352)
- Welcome Home! (newly adopted LWB children)

Kudos

Special thanks from LWB to Keely's sponsors, Girl Scout Troop 3352, shown here at the Crow Museum of Asian Art in Dallas, Texas. With your support, Keely has been able to receive the life-saving medical treatment she needed to develop into the precious, bubbly toddler she is today. Thank you so very much!

A Dream Come True: Cleft Bottles in China
by Julie Flynn Coleman, Director, Healing Homes

New Year is a time of looking forward with plans for positive change, don't you agree? Let's call it a "renewal of hope." It's a time to dream big. My dream every year always connects to the babies born with cleft... a recurring dream you might say! Many years ago on a visit to a rural orphanage I held a tiny frail baby born with cleft lip and palate. I gave her an Irish name, Aishling, which means "dream."
It soon became a dream of LWB to create healing homes to help fragile children like Aishling. "Baby steps" is a phrase that we often whisper like a mantra in LWB. I smile when I see how far our baby steps have taken us, as we now run four healing centers for orphaned children in China.
Our "dream" for babies born with cleft grew bigger - to reach out to EVERY orphanage in China through a video, brochure and poster in Chinese, which clearly explains the proper way to feed a baby born with cleft lip and palate.
One important piece was missing however: special cleft bottles which can be squeezed by caregivers so a baby with cleft can eat. These bottles have not been available in China, and so for years supporters have hand-carried boxes of them to share with orphanages. In 2011 alone, orphanages requested over 700 of these bottles from LWB to help their babies with cleft.
Thankfully after much research , we were able to source a "squeezy" cleft bottle manufactured IN CHINA! Amy Eldridge met with Director Zhang of the CCCWA and received national approval for this life-saving project; to get a box of cleft bottles and care pack to EVERY orphanage in China. We are so grateful to the CCCWA for agreeing to help with distribution.
We are so excited to announce that this month CCCWA staff, working together furiously in Beijing, assembled the packages. They are now sent!!!

PreNan Formula for Premature Infants What gave baby Delyth her chubby cheeks and healthy glow? Along with an incredible staff of medical personnel and nannies, PreNan formula has made a world of difference for Del and many other babies at LWB's Heartbridge Healing Home. PreNan is a high calorie, easily digestible formula made for premature infants. With these qualities, it is also ideal for other infants who aren't able to gain weight due to heart or digestive defects, or those whom we consider to be "failure to thrive." Our current PreNan costs are $400 to $600 per month, which we just don't have in our budget. If you would like to help with this expense, donations can be made on our website at:
http://www.lovewithoutboundaries.com/programs/healing-homes/sponsor-a-child/m.children/309/view/395. A case of PreNan costs $190, but donations in any amount are welcome. Thank you for helping!

Chinese New Year Red Envelope Campaign: Older Child Nutrition Program Chinese New Year, held on January 23rd this year, is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. Families will clean their homes to sweep away bad luck, decorate windows and doors with red colored couplets, feast with family members on the eve of Chinese New Year, and end the night with firecrackers. Early on New Year's Day children will don new outfits and receive money in red paper envelopes. But there are many children in China without families to celebrate with them. This year, to honor those children, Love Without Boundaries is running a special campaign for the children in our Believe in Me Huainan School. Won't you join us in giving a New Year's gift to an orphan? Our Believe in Me schools were designed to provide the joy of education to children in orphanages who would otherwise be unable to attend school. While the children delight in learning and expanding their horizons in these schools, the sad reality is that many of the children are hungry. This orphanage is a rural facility with very meager resources. LWB has made a commitment to these children to help them with better nutrition. The "Older Child Nutrition Program" is for kids aged 2-16 - mainly concentrating on providing them with much needed protein, which they rarely get. There are 75 students in our Believe in Me Huainan School. For less than $1 a snack, the children receive a fresh or dried protein snack, as well as fruit and milk. However this is an expense of nearly $1,000 per month! We would like to ask for your assistance to help us continue providing essential nutrition to these wonderful children. We are asking all our supporters to give the gift of a red envelope to an orphan in China this Chinese New Year. Simply put $1 in an envelope and mail it to:

Please include your name and email address with your donation if you would like to receive a tax receipt letter.
P.S. The number 8 is considered the luckiest number. If you are feeling particularly lucky, an $8 check would go even further in filling a tummy!
