Looking Back, Pressing Forward

I am very excited to share the link to our 2010 Annual Report for LWB.  When I first started compiling our year end summaries back in 2003, I could list our accomplishments in a few short paragraphs. I celebrated every child's life we were able to change, while wondering what the new year would hold for our work with kids in need. Each year our report grew, as the number of volunteers and supporters ... and the number of children helped... joyfully increased. There is no possible way I can thank everyone enough for their dedication and support to giving children a second chance. There is one thing I know with all my heart, however: The accomplishments of the past should never be more than our dreams for the future. Yes, over 1,500 children were helped once again by our foundation this year, but there are hundreds of thousands more who haven't been reached - children who are just as deserving and in need of someone to believe in them.

As I look back a2010 Annual Reportt 2010, I am struck by the new challenges that are facing all of us who are working with orphaned children in China. Just a decade ago the institutions were filled with predominantly healthy baby girls. Now, thanks to a decrease in the abandonment of healthy children and a marked increase in domestic adoptions, very few healthy infants will grow up in orphanage care. However, with the rising birth defect rate in China, orphanages are facing ever-increasing challenges of caring for babies who are abandoned with a multitude of medical needs. Outside of the major cities, few orphanages are equipped to properly care for babies with often critical health issues.

In June of this year, I stood in a rural orphanage that was overwhelmed with children who required urgent medical care to survive. In just one baby room, there were two tiny girls with heart disease, babies with spinal tumors, a baby with anal atresia, three newborns with cleft... and that was just in one small concrete room. This is the new face of orphan care in China: babies and children abandoned with special needs. As we are asked to help more and more children with often complex medical issues, we have had to assess our ability to provide for their pre- and post-operative care, which is why our fourth healing home opened its doors in 2010. We dream of a day when there is a healing home in every province, as we have seen the miracles that occur when fragile infants receive loving, one-on-one care. Real difficulties remain for the older orphaned children as well, especially those who have not been able to receive an adequate education to make it on their own someday. There are also complexities in meeting the nutritional needs of children in institutions, essential for healthy development, and with finding qualified foster families willing to take in babies born with medical needs.

We cannot be afraid of the challenges, however.  It is essential to keep dreaming big and to keep discovering new partners and supporters who want to get involved in the lives of orphaned children. I want to thank each of you for your past support this year, and I invite you to dream with us of ways to bring hope and healing to even more children who have sadly been abandoned. Together, we can make a real difference in their lives and continue to show the world that EVERY child born deserves love.

New Jersey - May 1, 2011

Spring is right around the corner and we're gearing up for the NJ Marathon Festival at the Shore in Long Branch, NJ. We currently have six runners on our team and are on the lookout for more! Runners can do the full marathon, a half marathon, or a two-person half marathon relay (about 6 miles foreach leg). Team LWB runners receive a lot of race benefits along with the satisfaction of raising money for the LWB Education program and helping to change the life of a child. We're also looking for company sponsors so please let Jessica Chu (jessica.chu@lwbmail.com) know if you have any leads. It will be a great race along the beach and there is no better way to experience this event than to be part of Team LWB!

Washington, DC - October 30, 2011

It is said there are two types of runners: those who ran Marine Corps and those who plan to.   If it's on your list, commit.  The time has come to run your favorite marathon with your favorite cause, LWB.  Registration for the 36th MCM opens on February 23, the anniversary of the 1945 flag raising during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. There is a Kids Fun Run on October 29 and a 10K or Marathon waiting for you; and some very vulnerable children in our Healing Homes waiting for these life saving funds!

.Foster Care Fundraiser Challenge

As we begin to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, we invite you to help us make it a happy year ahead for orphaned children in China by participating in our Foster Care Fundraiser Challenge. Our foster care programs in China allow approximately 250 children in seven provinces to share in the love of families of their own. foster father and childWonderful sponsors pay for the foster care fees through their monthly donations, but those funds cover just the basic caregiver salaries and monitor fees. Because we believe in treating the "whole child" and allowing them to reach their fullest potential, there are many other child care expenses that LWB believes must be met.

Our goal is to reach $10,000 by February 17th

2011 "Born In My Heart" Auction

April 14 - 19

Last year's "Born in My Heart" auction successfully raised over $24,500 to heal 13 beautiful children!  We couldn't have done this without the help of each of you, our wonderful donors.  Proceeds generated from your gifts have transformed the future for 13 little ones who are living healthier, happier lives and hopefully are one vital step closer to a loving home of their own.

We welcome your donations for the upcoming "Born in My Heart" auction! This spring's "Born in My Heart" auction will feature fine art and handmade quilthandmade items.  If you have an item to donate that isn't "fine art" or "handmade" please send it anyway.  Items that aren't listed in the "Born in My Heart" auction will be listed in a future, focused auction to benefit specific children or to fund a medical surgery trip like the Fuzhou Cleft Surgery trip in the fall of 2010.

We are continually grateful for the outpouring of support and donated items we receive from you each year and look forward to raising even more funds to help children in need with this new approach.

(Download newsletter to read about the auction changes.)

Your auction donation represents your time and talent and is truly a gift that forever alters lives.
Thank you for working with us to improve the auction for donors, supporters and especially the children.  If you have questions about this change or items to donate, please contact the auction coordinators:
