Message From the Principal

Dear parents,

Sunshine, smiles, hugs and cheery enthusiastic voices are the descriptors for opening week.  We are off to a great start.    These first few weeks are packed with learning expectations and procedures, and your children are adapting to their new classes and routines very well.

In many of the classrooms I have visited, the students are already telling me how they are practicing their new Habits of Mind.  First graders demonstrated how they manage their impulsivity!   They didn't blurt out the answers; they are learning to think before they act.  Ask your first graders about not bursting the bubbles!  Today, the middle school students will plan skits and make posters to teach each other how they can achieve our Student Learning Expectations and follow the Middle School Handbook by practicing the Habits of Mind.   Next week, at Curriculum Night, you will hear more about the Habits of Mind.

Curriculum Night for the middle school, grades 6, 7 and 8, will begin at 6:45pm on Tuesday,  September 11, and at 7:00pm on Thursday, September 13, for families with students in grades K through 5.  These meetings play a very important role in the parent-teacher partnership.  You will become familiar with the expectations, curriculum and routines that your child experiences.

So it's not all work, we will also party - see you at the Tailgate tonight.  Thank you, Parent Association for making this community event possible.

Beannacht,

Bernadette O'Leary

Magazines MAGAZINE SALE KICKS OFF

St. John's fundraising activities kick off this Friday, September 7, with an assembly explaining the magazine drive to students. This is a major fundraiser for our school; we receive 40% of each order!  As in the past, we will use postcards, email and a catolog to sell the magazines. Highlights of this year's drive include:

Donation option:  Instead of selling magazines, make a donation. $15 = 1 subscription
Family turn-in bonus:  Families that turn in a combined amount of 25 subscriptions, or the equivalent donation by the first turn-in day of September 12, will receive the prizes AND all of their children will earn participation in ALL THREE GAME DAYS.
Top 2 selling classes earn a free dress day
Top selling class earns a movie and popcorn party
Meet our school goal to raise $65,000 and the entire school gets a free dress day

Your child's magazine fundraising packet will come home tomorrow, Friday, September 7.  Questions?  Interested in helping?  Contact co-chairs: Heather Varvaro and Patti Coats.

Thanks in advance for your stewardship toward this fundraising endeavor.

Budgeting With Scrip

Which do you think is more challenging; creating a budget or sticking to one?  It's important to take control of your spending, but that doesn't mean it's easy!  Some of our families have mentioned that purchasing scrip helps them with budgeting.  We'd like to share some of their tips, and ours, for budgeting with scrip.

Use scrip retailers for all of your expenses.  By budgeting first, you can see how much money you have to spend in each different category.  Then choose your favorite scrip retailer for every category.  When you use scrip for gas, groceries, clothes, prescriptions, and other everyday shopping, your rebates really start to add up.  Not only are you sticking to the budget, you're also earning for St. John!

Start out small to get the hang of it.  Order gift cards you know you will use every week, like gas and groceries.  If you're not comfortable purchasing gift cards for your full amount of weekly grocery money, try ordering half of your budget in scrip to start.  Once you have a system that works, you can increase your purchases.

Take advantage of Reload and ScripNow™!  Use ScripNow and Reload options to reduce the time between paying for scrip and making your purchase.  When you use these options, and pay with PrestoPay™, your wait time is much shorter than waiting for plastic cards from your coordinator.

We hope this is helpful!  Happy budgeting and saving!
