Thank you, friends, parishioners, parents, and community members for your support of Carnaval! You sure partied with the purpose in mind. We will have new windows! On your behalf and on behalf of all our students, I thank our auction team! Led by Sheila Marty, and chaired by Jen Witeck and Marsha Fuesel, this committee worked tirelessly, volunteering countless hours for all of us! I am humbled by their dedication and blessed by their presence!
This month, we honor Mary, the Mother of God. The Rosary was beautiful; the children sang and prayed like angels. This morning, at prayer with the faculty, we talked about how Mary was Jesus' first teacher on earth and how we, as mothers, fathers, and teachers look to her, not only to intercede for us. She is also a model of willingness, guidance, tolerance, patience and hope.
It is hard to believe that we are in the second half of the final trimester! Besides praying and singing, St. John students are busy with projects, Environmental Science Camp preparation, field trips, retreats, book reports, essay writing and recording. Over the past few days, I have received persuasive letters from the fifth graders, read some third graders' paragraphs on Native American culture and listened to the seventh graders as they discussed their projects on passive solar power. Tonight, we have the Spring Concert for the third, fourth and fifth graders. I have had some previews and a few 'sneak peeks' and I guarantee that we are in for a great evening of entertainment!
Beannacht - God Bless,
Bernadette O'Leary

May Saint: St. Isidore the Farmer Feast Day: May 15 Virtue: Hope
Isidore was born in Madrid, Spain, in the twelfth century. He was a farmer on the land of a certain wealthy nobleman of Madrid. He never missed daily Mass. The neighbors accused him, to his employer, of neglecting his work in order to hear Mass, but Isidore replied, "I know, sir, that I am your servant, but I have another Master as well, to whom I owe service and obedience." The employer went to the farm one morning very early. When he found out that Isidore did not begin his work until an later hour, he went toward him to scold him. But he was surprised to find two strangers, each with a team of white oxen, ploughing, one on each side of Isidore. When he approached them, they disappeared. He said to Isidore, "Tell me, who are these two men who were ploughing with you just now?" Isidore said, "I have not seen any person. I ask no help from anyone but God each morning at Holy Mass." The nobleman understood that the two men he had seen were angels sent by God to help his servant, in return for his hearing Mass faithfully. Action: Ask God for help when you have a problem. |

May is National Bike Month St. John School is encouraging families to consider joining the many students and adults around the city who are commuting by bicycle.
The school will celebrate Friday, May 18 with the 3rd Annual Bike to School Day. This date coincides with both local and national campaigns to encourage students and parents to bike to school and work on this day. Last year almost 100 St. John students participated in the event. This is a fabulous opportunity to practice stewardship while engaging in a healthy lifestyle. Plan ahead and arrange your students for a group ride to school and don't forget helmets and a bike lock. Students are encouraged to use the fence around the playground to secure bicycles upon arrival to campus. Let's try for a 100 participants this year. Get those flat tires fixed and dust off your bikes. If you are a parent who is interested in leading a group of riders to school on this day, please contact Sr. Pablo at pkelley@stjohnsea.org. | |
