Message From the Principal
| |
We are celebrating Advent, a season of hope, of looking forward and preparing for our most special guest, the Baby Jesus, our Savior. It is a time to "Be watchful! Be alert!" (Mark 13:33). It is the time to slow down, yes, really slow down, during some of the busiest weeks of the year, and examine our relationship with God. Let us linger a while in His unconditional love for us.
Here at school, we are taking some time each day to light the Advent candle, pray and sing together. I could almost feel the presence of the baby Jesus on Tuesday as all the primary grade students silently gathered in the kindergarten classrooms for the lighting of the Advent candle. They were watchful, aware that something very important is happening. Our challenge as parents and teachers is to keep Jesus in the forefront, to be alert as we await His birthday. As you light the Advent candles at home, encourage your children to lead you in the songs and prayers that they are learning at school.
Please try to have your children at school by the first bell (8:20) these weeks as we are gathering for prayer right at 8:30. Also be aware that students are crossing the street to Egan at 8:30 on Mondays during Advent for our all school prayer. Perhaps you could park a block or two away and join us.
On Tuesday evening, the seventh graders delighted us with song and dance during their end-of-music-trimester performance. They also demonstrated their skills honed during Music Technology Class. Congratulations to all involved!
Look out for news of our Christmas programs and the dates for reconciliation for the students.
Beannacht - God Bless,
Bernadette O'Leary

The Pizza/Game Night held November 18 in support of the Kenya Well Project was a great success! The event had a great turn out with a lot of families bringing their favorite board games along. Everyone seemed to have a good time and over $850 was raised for the Well Project. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped to make this such a great success; the generosity of our school and parish is amazing. A special thanks to Shane Pierard for organizing the night and to all the people who brought along dessert, as well as those who helped to set-up and clean-up the hall. Project Progress We hope to have the geological survey carried out at the well site in the next couple of weeks and after that we will be getting quotes for the drilling and installation of the well. Saint of the Month: Saint Nicolas Feast Day - December 6 Virtue - Understanding
Nicholas was born toward the end of the third century. He was ordained a priest, and appointed abbot of a monastery.
Nicholas was very generous to the poor. He showed himself the special protector of the innocent and wronged. Once, he heard that a man who had become very poor intended to sell his children into servitude. He went out by night, flung a bag of gold into the window of the sleeping father, and hurried away. Later the father fell at his feet and said, "Nicholas, you are my helper. You have delivered myself and my daughters!"
St. Nicholas is regarded as the special patron of children; the name Santa Claus comes from his name. He died at Myra in the year 342.
The Emperor Justinian built a church in his honor at Constantinople about the year 540. In 1807 his relics were brought to Bari, Italy. He has always been venerated in the Latin and Greek Churches, but the Russian Church seems to honor him more than any other saint. He is the patron saint of Russia.
