Message From the Principal

 | Mike Fletcher, Distinguished Graduate, St. John School Class of 1980, honored at Purple & Gold Endowment Dinner
|
The leaves are changing color, the days are growing shorter and parent-teacher conference time is upon us! The teachers have been looking forward to this great opportunity to get to know their students even better. When you come in for your conference, be sure to visit the library! We are delighted to announce that the remodel is complete and the library is online.
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to get to know many St. John parishioners, alumni, parents and grandparents of current students and alumni at the Endowment Dinner. Almost one hundred and fifty people attended; the evening was sold out! It was a very enjoyable event and the most successful to date. More than $35,000 was raised and still more is coming in with additional gifts and matching money from local corporations. Our total fund now exceeds $400,000 - we are well on our way to our halfway mark of $500,000.
Brian and Lori Stanford were the lucky winners of the $250 Metropolitan Grill gift certificate procured by alumni parent, Jim Rowe. Thank you, Mr. Rowe, and a hearty congratulations and thank you to Michele Thornquist, and her Endowment Dinner Committee. Check out the Thank You St. John Video at http://www.st-johnschool.org/Admissions/Top10Reasons/tabid/150/Default.aspx.
Our soccer and cross-country teams have been doing well and the youngest runners were featured on the news! St. John teachers are also staying active and involved in sports - playing in the Bump-it-Up Volleyball league. Then there are all those fit students and their parents who are walking and biking to school. Neither wind nor rain has been stopping them. A number of families have reported that they have walked every single day. Keep it up!
I have a request for those of you who drive: please respect our neighbors. I have received complaints about parking in driveways and cars blocking the sidewalk. If you need to park, please do so with consideration for others. Plan to park a block or two away and get exercise as you walk to the school!
Beannacht - God Bless,
Bernadette O'Leary

Road Construction to Begin Monday
Major road improvements along 85th Street, to include the intersection at Greenwood and 80th, begin Monday. Seattle Department of Transportation projects work to continue through October 2012. Needless to say, congestion at arrival and dismissal times around St. John School will be impacted. Please plan accordingly.
Do you have an idea to lessen the impact on the community during arrival and dismissal times? Please contact pkelley@stjohnsea.org with suggestions. We will do all we can to help facilitate your plan. One idea is for parents to gather at the Fred Meyer parking lot to facilitate a "walk to school" pool. What are your ideas?
For more information please read the attached flyer from SDOT.

CYO Cross Country
We are on the home stretch and are trying to kick into the finish line. It has been a really good season. The kids have been really very good and their efforts and energy have been supreme. More important they have been good friends to each other and we believe they have had a lot of fun. Friday 5:00pm is the show up time for the Pumpkin Run. We will all run the one-mile course starting close to 5:30pm. Everyone should dress in fall colors. We will have a snack and then give out pumpkins beginning with our eighth graders. We will be joined by our good friends from the Christ the King/St. Benedict CYO cross country team. All questions about pumpkins or helping can be directed to Scott Cary. We should have enough pumpkins for all children, but preference is given to those who ran in races and made efforts to be at practices. We should have everything wrapped up by 6:30pm. The 4th-8th Grade Team Championship is Sunday, October 16, at 1pm - see schedule. The PK-3rd runners did a tremendous job to set up the older runners. We believe that we will have several runners earn shirts for finishing in the top six, that several of the grade teams might win championships, and that we should finish with one of the top three overall trophies. The whole team gets a chance to cheer the coaches on as they race the mile course. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer on the team. Eric's Little Heros - KOMO News - features CYO Cross Country - visit http://www.komonews.com/sports/heroes/131563128.html. It is a really wonderful and touching piece and it features a lot of runners in purple! |

St. John Women's Shelter In Need
The Women's shelter needs volunteers. Every Saturday and Sunday night up to twelve women from the Noel House Homeless Shelter for Women stay in the Mezzanine at Egan Hall. Two adult chaperones are needed to stay with them each of those nights. We are having difficulty staying open each weekend. We need a minimum of two volunteers to stay in order to operate the shelter. With the colder weather coming it becomes increasingly important to man this mission. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help please contact Mary Kearney at 206-297-7072 or email marytkearney@comcast.net. Consider us as you are making your volunteer decisions these next few weeks. We are listed under Parish Specific/Outreach, women's shelter on the volunteer sign up page of the school website. This is a great way for those working parents to get their volunteer hours. Volunteer once a year or once a month no minimum commitment.
