I shall live in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life.

from Psalm 23

Message From the Principal

Mrs. O'Leary

October is the month of the Rosary.  We are celebrating by saying a decade of the rosary each morning. The all school recitation of the Living Rosary will be on Friday October 21.

October is Walk and Wheel month, and we are encouraging you and your children to walk or bike to school.   I realize that the weather is growing colder and wetter; however, this will just make it a more interesting challenge and encourage us to walk faster!  Let's see if we can walk every day for the whole month!  If you live far out, how about driving to Fred Meyers, parking there and then walking the five blocks - good exercise and fewer parking problems.  Perhaps a few parents could meet there and take turns escorting the students from 85th to school and back. All of you who come from the south could set up a similar arrangement!  It's time to consider the parking difficulties. Tuesday a Seattle Parking Enforcement Officer was here writing tickets because drivers had parked and left their vehicles in the red zones. It will be even more difficult when the repaving begins on Greenwood Avenue. Put on your walking shoes!

Mark your calendars for very important meetings and events this month!

October 11   Progress Reports will be sent home with the children in grades three through eight.  Free dress on that day as a thank you for reaching our goal with the Magazine Sale!  Thank you.  Please refer to the Family Handbook for dress code guidelines.

Successful Conferencing
  • Be on time for your conference.  You will have twenty minutes with your child's teacher; conferences cannot go longer as the schedules are very full so please be on time!
  • Have a chat with your child prior to the conference to hear what is going well and to learn if there are any concerns that you should share with the teacher.
  • Have your questions ready and be prepared to offer the teacher insight on your child.  We are all partners in the children's journeys.

St. John Grad Wins $10,000 Scholarship

UCB Pharmaceuticals awarded Camille Wiseman, '07 a $10,000 college scholarship.  Camile was recognized not only for her academic performance; she was also recognized for her community involvement and outreach.  After her Crohn's disease seemed to put an end to her sports career at Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle, Camille discovered a truth that she still believes in today: "When one door closes, another door opens." Not willing to wait for those doors to open by themselves, Camille soon joined the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America's Northwest chapter, becoming the chapter's top fundraiser by bringing in more than $11,000. She even trained for a half-marathon fundraiser and surprised everyone by completing the race, which stretched between Napa and Sonoma. Camille has also found fulfillment in volunteer work, helping to rebuild homes in New Orleans with Shirts Across America and working at a soup kitchen there. Camille now dreams of moving to Ethiopia to open an orphanage. Giving back through community service has given Camille's life a purpose larger than Crohn's, and she plans to fulfill that purpose by studying psychology at Gonzaga University and ultimately working with prison inmates.

From the Playground

Raindrops keep falling on my head...As we roll through fall and into winter please be sure your children arrive at school prepared for outdoor recess.  We are either all out or all in during recess and try very hard to be outside for fresh air and busy play, staying inside only if the weather is extreme.  Children should have sturdy shoes or boots, warm coats with hoods or hats - no umbrellas, please.  Thank you to all the volunteers who have responded to my call.  Remaining are two openings on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please go to the Volunteer Website if you are available.  Mrs. Catherine Dahlgren, Our Lady of Perpetual Asphalt
