Message From the Principal
|
|
It is hard to believe that we are finishing our first month of school and that conference time is approaching. I am enjoying stimulating visits to the classrooms where I witness solid teaching and learning! This week, I learned some new palindromes, I practiced the hard 'c' sound, I sang in prayer with the fourth graders, I listened to a non-fiction book about dogs with the second graders, and on the playground, I named six children correctly! I visited the seventh graders who were on retreat at Camp Don Bosco, and I listened with joy as they shared how they will use their gifts for the benefit of our community.
The teachers inform me that Iowa Tests of Basic Skills are progressing well. Continue to remind your children to eat a hearty breakfast and get a good night's sleep. Then encourage them to do their best and use their gifts! There is no other 'homework' to help them prepare for these tests.
On Tuesday, I joined Michele Thornquist and her Endowment team as they as they began final arrangements for the Purple and Gold Dinner. It will be a grand affair! I am looking forward to it. See you there!
Beannacht - God Bless,
Bernadette O'Leary

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY
Do you say the rosary in your household? The rosary is a beautiful way to pray. It can be especially comforting in times of crisis when words are hard to find. Saying the rosary is an excellent way to establish a routine of daily prayer, and teaching your children to say the rosary is giving them the gift of a prayer they can always turn to.
Father Crispin is asking each parish family to say at least one decade of the rosary together during this month especially for the intentions of our 5-Year Parish Plan, the introduction of the new Roman Missal, and those affected by the current world economic situation. There is a sign up sheet in the back of the church for picking a date to commit to do this with your family. If you don't have a rosary, please call the parish office - 206-782-2810.
We'll be meeting together as a parish in the church to recite the rosary for our parish intentions at 7pm on October 6. Father will lead us in song and there will time for silent reflection. Please join us!

CAR WASH SUCCESS
Thank you for your help and support last Saturday! The car wash was a great display of our amazing community coming together for a good cause. The St John students involved in the car wash all worked very hard. It was an awesome group effort that will really have positive impact on the children and people in Kenya. A total of 48 cars were washed and $837.00 to the Kenya fund!

ST. AL/JOHN CROSS COUNTRY
Last and final call for CYO Cross Country. This Sunday, October 2, 3pm is the final Preliminary Meet. All runners who did not run in the previous meet must run in this meet to qualify for the Ribbon Run (K-3rd) or the Team Championship (4th-8th).
For the first time ever the team has topped 300 registered runners. Last Sunday 202 students raced. Over 100 young athletes have an opportunity to qualify for the championships and contribute points to the team. For the first time ever the program has the opportunity to try and defend a championship. The team is learning how personal effort and energy can be a positive influence for the whole team.
The performances last Sunday were spectacular. All 202 runners came with smiles and had fun while running to the best of their own individual skills. A big shout out to the 8th-Girls, 7th-Boys, 5th-Girls, 1st-Boys and 1st-Girls for their outstanding turnout. Finally, a special thank you to the parents who volunteered time to CYO and the St. Al/John team - your extra efforts were deeply appreciated.
For more information about registering contact John Ward, Coach at wardseattle@gmail.com or 206-789-1791.
