SHORT N' SHARP WORKOUTS FOR OVERALL WELLBEING

Just like our sessions at Fitness Fix...
A recent study has supported the theory that shorter exercise sessions that result in the same calorie burn as longer sessions (i.e. more intense sessions) may be better for overall health.
Using data collected from 1,841 adults, researchers from Queen's University in Ontario found that individuals who participate in the most intense exercise reduce their risk of developing metabolic syndrome by two-thirds compared with other exercisers who burn the same amount of calories but don't ramp it up to 'vigorous' levels. Metabolic syndrome is the collection of risk factors, including excess fat on the tummy, issues with blood sugar levels, low levels of good cholesterol, and high blood pressure, that increase a person's risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
For the study, participants wore an accelerometer during their waking hours for one week, in order to gather data on their precise movements and exercise intensity. Study subjects who undertook 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity were shown to be 2.4 times less likely to develop metabolic syndrome than subjects who did 150 minutes of moderate exercise. The researchers noted, however, that the results showed an association rather than a cause-and-effect.

NUTRITION FOR MARATHON WALKERS
Training tips to keep your energy levels up for the event
With your increased mileage during your training, you will be burning more calories and need proper nutrition to build muscles and capillaries. Do not go on any extreme, unbalanced diets during your marathon training. However, now is a good time for those who are overweight to start on a balanced, mildly calorie restricted diet, or to maintain their present balanced diet with no increase in calories or portions.
It's not too late to join the Fitness Fix Team - Auckland Marathon,1/4 Marathon & 5km event still open CLICK HERE to find out more

Congratulations to Julia ... Julia is doing the 8 week get firm and foxy programme and she has removed 6kg in 6 weeks!
Julia's secret to success is following the programme to the letter. She shared with us last week that friends try and tempt her to try food that isn't part of her plan, but she resists & when they say but it is only a taste her reply is... "imagine if I said that every time someone tempted me to have a taste". Well done Julia you are looking fantastic.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES WITH VITAMINS & MINERALS
Are you ready for cold and flu season? If you want to help avoid being sick and feeling like you have to go to the doctor to get antibiotics and other drugs, now is the time to be thinking about prevention! This week Naturopath, Lynda Wharton will share her advice on the flu vaccine vs vitamin D
Around this time of year, my clients start asking me what I think of the flu vaccine? The truth is that after mountains of research, the evidence supporting the benefits of annual flu vaccination is weak.
Recently a large review looked at the efficacy of flu vaccine trials from around the world. Called the Cochrane review, this study aimed at establishing the efficacy of flu vaccination for healthy people under the age of 60, as well as looking at adverse effects.
Please ask me about your winter supplementation needs
