Interim General Manager's Update
I hope this newsletter finds you well. I started my week swearing in the new Sun Valley Area Neighborhood Council (SVANC) Board, which was really delightful for me. Nearly 5 years ago, the first meeting I attended as a new Project Coordinator was the SVANC Land Use Committee where a very patient Mike O'Gara, Mary Benson and Karl Kunak taught me about what an EIR (Environmental Impact Report) was. I was so impressed by these tenacious community leaders with their self taught knowledge asking the huge local waste company to mitigate their proposed dump expansion. My respect for Neighborhood Council folk has only grown from that point so it was a treat to come back as the Interim General Manager to swear the new Board members in after all I've learned from Neighborhood Council leaders these past years.
The rest of the week, my life has been filled with elections, funding and bylaws, oh my! The Elections Division, led by the very talented Stephen Box, is working hard to verify candidates as we have a regional candidate filing deadline nearly every week until mid-September. Region 4 candidate filing deadline is Tuesday, August 21st at midnight. If you are applying as a candidate, please help our elections staff by making sure you are including all necessary documentation with your filing so we don't have to spend time tracking it down from you. I'm furiously trying to keep up with updating all the bylaws to comply with the election ordinance before each regions' election day. Thanks to those who have submitted bylaw amendments and who have waited with exquisite patience for me to get to them. I do need to update even those bylaws that I approved in the past year so I appreciate everyone understanding my desire to do the review just once as opposed to updating 95 bylaws 3 separate times because of all the election changes this past year. As for funding, my goal is to put the FUN back into our Neighborhood Council FUNding Program! I am really enjoying working with our enthusiastic staff, Neighborhood Council leaders and our City partners, especially the Controller, CAO and CLA's offices, on creating a more efficient and transparent program on both the Department side and the Neighborhood Council side. Check out some of the updates we are taking in the Neighborhood Council Funding Program Updates below with more to come in the next few weeks. Please let me know what you think and any suggestions you have by emailing me at grayce.liu@lacity.org. Stay cool and enjoy your weekend! Best, Grayce Liu, Interim General Manager Department of Neighborhood Empowerment Empower Yourself. Empower Your Community. Empower LA.
