General Manager's Update
I hope this newsletter finds you all well. It's exciting to have this opportunity to serve the Neighborhood Councils in the General Manager capacity. I'm honored and very thankful to Mayor Villaraigosa, the Neighborhood Council leaders and our staff for putting their trust in me. I'm also grateful for the time I worked with our former General Manager, BongHwan Kim, for the leadership lessons I learned from him these past 5 years. In my first week as General Manager, the staff has kindly been teaching me all the details about the ins and outs of the Department budget and the Neighborhood Council funding program to supplement the general foundation I had. I have great respect for the hard work our staff put in to make the program function while still supporting the Neighborhood Councils in the field, too. We'll be working together in these upcoming weeks to implement improvements so please stay tuned because we'd love your feedback as well.

BongHwan's Last Day with the Elections Division
|
Last Saturday, our elections team did a fantastic job administering the elections for Region 1 - the North East Valley. Much thanks to Stephen Box, our Elections Coordinator, and Glenn Bailey, the Independent Election Administrator, for their great leadership, and to the wonderful volunteers from Neighborhood Councils across the Valley who showed up to guarantee our elections success. We're getting ready for the next elections on September 8th in the North West Valley. I know that there have been some concerns about the background of candidates in this election cycle, and many have asked us to step in and disqualify candidates for their criminal records. We administer elections based on existing laws, which do not allow us to ban such candidates. Any changes involve action from the City Attorney's Office and likely, the City Council. In the meantime, if you don't think the candidates are right for your Neighborhood Council, then please get out into your community to recruit candidates and vote for those who want instead. I look forward to collaborating with you in the upcoming months, and I'm very touched by all the offers of support from everyone! Thank you and have a great weekend!!
Best, Grayce Liu, Interim General Manager Department of Neighborhood Empowerment Empower Yourself. Empower Your Community. Empower LA.
