General Manager's Weekly Update
Neighborhood Council Elections
The Neighborhood Council elections are off and running with four Valley regions having held their meetings. Each region is being supported by experienced Independent Election Administrators. All four regions have decided on their shared election dates.
An exciting outreach event for candidates, titled "Rally in the Valley" will be held on Friday June 22 from 6:30 - 8 pm at Francis Polytechnic High School, 12431 Roscoe Blvd, Sun Valley 91352. I plan on being there to recruit new faces to join in on the best kept civic engagement secret in the city. Our plan includes building on the lessons learned from each region into the following regions. Thanks to the Valley Neighborhood Council leaders who are taking on this project with such great enthusiasm. The Leadership Academy continues to educate, inspire, and boost involvement through many inspiring and informative workshops. I'm pleased to announce that every Valley Neighborhood Council has now attended at least one workshop!! Neighborhood Councils are using the media in new and exciting ways as well.
Many Neighborhood Councils are pooling their funds to take out a series of full page ads in the Daily News and, as a result, our staff received several calls from prospective candidates throughout the Valley. On Friday, June 8th, the Daily News printed an editorial titled "Get involved in your community" which noted the 10th anniversary of the Neighborhood Council system, how Neighborhood Council involvement gives you a taste of political life as well as helping others and your community, and also promoted our website, EmpowerLA.org. The Elections Division has set up offices at the Van Nuys City Hall, 14410 Sylvan Street, Van Nuys, Ca 91401. They can also be reached at the Elections hotline - 818-293-VOTE (8683). Folks are encouraged to stop by and say hello. As the elections move forward, we are finding ways to innovate, form partnerships, and in so doing, save precious city funds - a win-win-win solution which deserves high praise, especially during these tough economic times. Kudos to Grayce Liu, Stephen Box, and the other members of the elections team for what promises to be the most successful and cost effective NC elections in the city's history! Local Heroes Some of you may have noticed a new website feature which recognizes and promotes local heroes. In order to cast a wider net throughout this great city, Neighborhood Councils and others can now submit their own nominations of people who inspire and move them with their exemplary acts of community service and civic leadership. We invite all of you to submit your nominations for YOUR local hero for more Angelenos to be inspired by. NC Funding Updates - Budgets due Friday, July 13, 2012
The mandatory budget templates will be sent to Neighborhood Council Treasurers and Second Signatories by week's end. Your Mayor/Council approved budgets are $37,000 for next fiscal year. Your 2012/2013 Budget can be submitted online at empowerla.org/budget2012-2013
Sincerely, BongHwan (BH) Kim, General Manager Department of Neighborhood Empowerment Empower Yourself. Empower Your Community. Empower LA.

Local Hero - Tarzana's Events Maven
Tarzana Neighborhood Council's Denyse Selesnick has served on the Board for two years and she currently Chairs their Outreach Committee, a role that allows her to put her professional skills as an event organizer to work.
After living in Tarzana for twenty years and leading her Home Owners Association as President, Denyse was looking for an opportunity to get more involved in her neighborhood when she received a postcard talking about the Tarzana Neighborhood Council and it stirred her curiosity, prompting her to get involved.

"I was recently semi-retired and had always been active in my industry and internationally," she explained, "and I decided it would be good to give back to my community."
Opportunity presented itself to Denyse when her Council asked her to represent them by serving on the 2011 Senior Symposium committee at the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center in Reseda "so I could see how the money was being spent."...(Continue Reading)

EmpowerLA - Reachin' Out!
Rashad Trapp-Rucker, Vice-President of the West Adams Neighborhood Council, greets stakeholders by giving them a gold key to the city, one that is guaranteed to open doors and help them find their way to City Hall. Emblazoned with the name of the council on the side, the key is actually a key-chain that is better suited for opening bottles than doors but it serves as a reminder that Neighborhood Councils are the most effective route to City Hall, that they are the official route to City Hall, and that they are the most direct route to City Hall.
"The West Adams Neighborhood Council has several outreach strategies," explained Rashad, "this simple key serves as a reminder that our Neighborhood Council is "key" to opening doors and working together to improve the quality of life in our community."
