General Manager's Weekly Update

I hope that you and your families had a meaningful Memorial Day - especially given the number of Americans who have recently returned from war and who continue to risk their lives overseas for our country.

This has been another busy week of empowering neighborhoods. Councilman Parks recently introduced a motion (Councilman Parks Motion 5/25) in City Council which is raising a concern as to how Neighborhood Councils can more effectively weigh in on citywide issues such as the location of waste-sheds that serve as temporary repositories for waste separation of recyclable materials.  This will directly affect the health and quality of life in the affected neighborhoods.  Neighborhood Councils are requested to attend the Education and Neighborhoods Committee to discuss this immediate policy issue as well as the larger citywide issue of Neighborhood Councils fulfilling their advisory role as established by City Charter.  You are encouraged to attend to speak on this matter.  We will notify you when this matter will be heard in committee.

Neighborhood Council budgets for Fiscal Year 2012/13 are due to the department on Friday, July 13th.

Next Friday, we will be sending out an electronic template for you to use in preparing and submitting your budget. The City Council adopted the Budget and Finance committee recommendations this week approving the Mayor's recommended amount of $37,000 per Neighborhood Council.  Further instructions will be provided with the budget template.  If you haven't already done so, please begin planning your budgets by asking your stakeholders what your budget priorities should be - this is another great opportunity to engage your community.

Sincerely,

Congress of Neighborhood Survey

Last year's Congress of Neighborhoods drew 600 community leaders to City Hall for a full day of advocacy, networking, and training with guests that included the Mayor, the City Attorney, and members of the State Assembly and the City Council. It was a great day for the participants, for the neighborhood Councils, and for the City of Los Angeles.

Plans are already underway for the upcoming Congress of Neighborhoods scheduled for September 22, 2012 and all that is missing is your input.

Please take a moment to take the Congress of Neighborhoods survey and let's work together to make this Congress even bigger and better than last year!
