As of today, we have 75 RSVP's for our Open House on Monday, April 30th.  With the release of the Mayor's proposed budget for next fiscal year and the upcoming elections, there's a lot to talk about so I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday night.  Here's our press release for the Open House.  There's still time to RSVP so please join us!

We submitted our response to the proposed cut of our two filled staff positions (Sr. Accountant and Neighborhood Empowerment Analyst) to the Budget and Finance Committee. The Department's budget is now scheduled to be heard next week, Wednesday, May 3rd, sometime between the hours of 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. (please click here for the schedule).  You are encouraged to participate in the proceedings to advise the committee regarding your concerns on the budget and the Neighborhood Council elections.

Have a great weekend, and I hope to see you on Monday night!

Message from BH about the Neighborhood Council Elections

Upcoming Neighborhood Council Selections and Elections

Congratulations to Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council for their upcoming selection process on May 19th and to Region 1 Neighborhood Councils for locking down their election date of August 4th!  Election Coordinator Jerry Kvasnicka will be contacting your Neighborhood Council soon to schedule meetings in May to decide on the election days for the other regions.

New Neighborhood Council FAQ's

We know that you have a lot of questions about the upcoming Neighborhood Council elections.  To help clear up some of the confusion while we are working on the Election Manual, we've put together a Frequently Asked Questions document that will help you sort through the information.

Updated Region and Election Weeks

Thanks to your feedback, we have also updated the list of regions and proposed election weeks based on feedback we received from the Neighborhood Councils and expect at least one last revision once we are certain which Neighborhood Councils are conducting selections.  Please remember the deadline to change the bylaws to hold a selection is May 12th.

Congratulations to the First Community Garden Academy Graduates!
The very first Community Garden Academy in Los Angeles concluded last Saturday with a graduation ceremony in San Pedro.  Conceived in partnership with the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust and Community Health Councils, this pilot project was intended to engage Neighborhood Councils and stakeholders with a passion for gardening in starting local gardens. With eight workshops, the Academy covered all the major areas needed for starting and managing a successful community garden, including site control/legal issues, fundraising, volunteer management, permaculture/sustainable design and management, and garden related policy issues and advocacy.

This is one small part of a rapidly growing community building movement around local and healthy food. Thanks to the twenty plus community garden activists who inspired us with their commitment to community service and making a difference for others.  Future workshops are uncertain given resource constraints, but for more information, please contact BongHwan (BH) Kim at bonghwan.kim@lacity.org or by calling
(213) 978-1551.

19 Days Until Demand Warrants Are Due - May 16th!

For more information on the demand warrant and purchase card deadlines and procedures, please click here.

Don't forget that May 16th is also the last day to encumber funds for election outreach for next fiscal year

For election outreach expenditures, the Board will have to provide a Board resolution and an excel spreadsheet of the vendors that may be used for the elections as well as one total amount to be encumbered.

Here is a sample of the election outreach spreadsheet as well as a template for the Board Resolution.

If you require the excel or word documents of the sample and template, please contact NCSupport@lacity.org so we can email them to you.
