It has been such a busy week for us here as we prepare for elections in addition to our normal daily work of supporting the Neighborhood Councils that we'll be sending out weekly E-newsletters to keep everyone updated on what's going on for Neighborhood Councils.
On Tuesday, we had a productive Board of Neighborhood Commissioners meeting at the beautiful Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools, which is located on the former site of the Ambassador Hotel. The Commission is looking at developing a set of standards to guide Neighborhood Council operations as well as raise awareness of the Neighborhood Council system through a citywide publicity and outreach campaign.
Board members from the Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council and the Mid City West Neighborhood Council were also there to pick up their 10 year anniversary certificates. A big congratulations on this significant milestone! The Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates released their white paper on the results of the Mayor's Budget Survey. (Part 1/Part2) They made recommendations on the budget, including suggestions on the Neighborhood Council system. I appreciate the Budget Advocates amazing breadth of work and hope you will take a moment to read the white paper. |
Lastly, the invite for our Open House on Monday, April 30, 2012, has gone out to all City departments and electeds. Please drop by to network with them and one another. I'm also happy to have Stephen Box, one of our Election Coordinators and a strong advocate himself, teach a workshop on "Advocacy that Works, Outreach that Connects, Elections that Empower" in preparation for the upcoming Neighborhood Council elections.
I look forward to seeing you at the Open House! Sincerely, BongHwan (BH) Kim, General Manager Department of Neighborhood Empowerment Empower Yourself. Empower Your Community. Empower LA.

Neighborhood Council Elections
The City Attorney submitted the draft of the revised ordinance language to the City Council yesterday. (Letter to the Department/Report)
Because the Education and Neighborhoods Committee may review this matter at its April 17th meeting, we will be submitting our draft election report next week, including the list or proposed regions and elections weeks on April 13th. Please provide comments by April 12th to Grayce Liu at Grayce.Liu@lacity.org.

EmpowerLA Leadership Academy
The spring semester of EmpowerLA's Leadership Academy goes on the road with a brand new roster of empowerment sessions designed for individual leaders and Neighborhood Councils.
Empower Yourself sessions are hands-on opportunities that feature topics such as Public Speaking, Social Media, Powerful Partnerships, Group Dynamics, Successful Advocacy, and Parliamentary Procedure. The tools and strategies presented in these sessions are designed for personal growth.
Empower Your Community sessions present tools and strategies for improving the effectiveness of Neighborhood Councils and include Advocacy Campaigns, Media Strategies, Outreach Tools, Neighborhood Networks, Communications, Wordpress Websites, Newsletter Strategies, and Managing Mailing Lists.
Empower LA sessions are hosted by General Manager (GM) BongHwan (BH) Kim and feature City Hall leaders at the GM's Roundtable. These are great opportunities for Neighborhood Councils to engage stakeholders in face-to-face sessions with the people responsible for running the City and delivering City Services.

EmpowerLA Election Outreach
Neighborhood Council Board elections is the most significant outreach opportunity for Councils.
From identifying community partners to enlisting great candidates, the elections put the focus back on engaging stakeholders and telling the Neighborhood Council story. This is the time to communicate clearly to the community and to City Hall the relevance of Neighborhood Councils and the power of community advocacy.
We are supporting the upcoming Neighborhood Council elections with a citywide outreach campaign and with outreach strategies for the regional election events.
